Background
Taab grew up in a clan of Chadra-Fan that had recently left the planet of Chad after increasingly worsening tsunamis had wrought devastation on many other Chadra-Fan. They had settled on the planet Jakku when Taab was very young and she has no memories of Chad. Taab, like many other Chadra-Fan, loved to tinker from a young age. With not many resources on Jakku, she preferred to focus her mental effort on figuring out how something worked and how to fix it. This later led to her participation in scavenging missions as she was quick to pick up what was useful and what wasn't, and to fix something if it could be fixed.
But Taab found herself becoming increasingly bored with the inherent limitations of the planet and the same old junk. She craved bigger problems with more complex solutions. As an adolescent, she took up shop with some of her older cousins in town who had started a tech/scavenged parts shop with offworld traders. There she was first able to learn the ins and out of computer systems as she played with computer parts and electronics from many places. However, most of the systems that made it to Jakku weren't too sophisticated and she craved an even bigger challenge.
When Taab was 15 (young adult for Chadra-Fan), she overheard two offworld traders discussing their frustration at not being able to decrypt a message on a datapad and she enthusiastically offered to give it a shot. Though she wasn't super familiar with the coding, she was able to decrypt it after about twenty minutes. Intrigued, the traders offered her a position working for them, essentially for room and board and a small amount of credits, in exchange for her services as a slicer. Though she didn't consider herself a slicer at the time, she figured she could learn pretty quickly. Her family and clan, while sad that she would be leaving, encouraged her to go and make new friends and learn whatever she wanted.
The traders were actually part of the Black Sun, and they brought her back with them to Ord Mantell. Taab naively thought they all were simply friendly individuals and couldn't conceptualize that they would be out to truly harm anyone. She was simply happy to have friends and be able to pursue her interests. Indeed, slicing supplied her with what she truly wanted: an endless series of complex puzzles just waiting to be solved. She was briefly under the tutelage of another of the Black Sun's resident slicers, Airax Desik, before Airax left for another planet. Then Taab was left to her own devices aside from when the Black Sun required something of her.
Over the years, Taab became involved in escalating crimes, either directly or indirectly. She was initially trusted only to decode communication and help protect the computers from attacks, but over time she began stealing secrets and credits directly from others for the Black Sun. After she became a trusted member, she was brought along on missions where direct access was required to steal valuable information or to sabotage equipment.
When tensions began escalating between the Empire and the Republic on Jakku, Taab asked her boss, Verse Mellian, to have time to go back there to help her family. Her request was denied but while upset, Taab naively figured there was a good reason for it. Her communication with her family was cut off for a while during the Battle of Jakku, but then after much anxiety, she was able to reestablish contact in early 6 ABY. Her family had been fine, though scared, as they hadn't been near the main battles. But living through multiple massive battles and the planet almost breaking apart had been very stressful for them. Taab grew more distressed that she was not allowed to visit.
In later 6 ABY, Taab was sent on one of the missions with the Black Sun. Primed by then to be suspicious of them after she had been forbidden from seeing her family, she realized that she was being asked on the mission to sabotage life support systems for multiple targets of the Black Sun currently in bacta tanks. That's when the full weight of her actions became apparent to her.
Rather than sabotage the bacta tanks, Taab warned the hospital of the attacks and trapped three Black Sun members who were working with her on her way out. She also remotely wiped as much as she could on her computer in Ord Mantell and anything linked to it, including a decent chunk of data important to the Black Sun. Realizing she couldn't go back to the stronghold on Ord Mantell or to her home on Jakku, Taab bought some rations and snuck onto the first ship she saw and hid out to see where it would take her.
Motivation
Ambition (Expertise): Taab is endlessly curious and wants to prove to herself that she can solve any puzzle or unlock any door, metaphorically or otherwise. Although she is curious what is behind the door or puzzle, she is more interested in the simple act of working the problem to its final solution. To accomplish this, she needs to be the very best at what she does. She refuses to give up on solving a puzzle or being cut off from something she wants to learn and if she is absolutely stumped, she will come back to it later, again and again.
Obligations
Taab has the Bounty obligation and the Family obligation for a total obligation of 30. Tabb is pretty sure there is a bounty on her head from the Black Sun; after all, she got three of their members caught and destroyed some important data she had collected over the years for them on her way out.
Taab also feels an obligation to help and protect her clan, but knows it's likely not smart to spend much time there with the Black Sun after her. She still wants to help her clan whenever she can.
Description
Taab is about average height for a Chadra-Fan at one meter tall. She wears scanner goggles on top of a messy shock of brown hair, and a slightly dirty mechanic's utility suit that gives her easy access to all her slicer gear and other gadgets she's accumulated over the years. Taab is naturally quite friendly and outgoing, though she has toned down due to recent events. She loves to strategize and problem solve and will talk endlessly through any puzzle or problem to its solution. She spends her free time modding or fixing electronics and writing programs for general use or for slicing. Taab shares the common Chadra-Fan intense fear of water and refuses to have anything to do with it, being certain that she will drown.
