Background
Maranai has grown up on Phatrong. He was not part of a clovoc, just like most of her compatriots, but she feels bound by the same sense of duty and honour as those Kyuzo that belong to clovocs.
This sense of duty, and her natural talents led her to serve in the Grand Army as part of a reconnaisance detachment. As the war moved on, she got trained in guerilla tactics as well.
That helped as the Republic turned itself into the Empire. She just deserted, and used the skills she'd acquired to disappear. She moved on to live a healthy outdoorswoman's life, living on not so populated planets by hunting, or escorting rich idiots so that they can kill a rare beast.
One day, however, she made a fatal mistake. Was it because she drank a bit too much of brandy that morning? who knows? She certainly doesn't: otherwise she wouldn't have mistaken the swoop bike for a blastail on Kashyyyk. The resulting explosion took out the Imperial trooper owning that swoop bike, their partner along with their swoop bike, and a third trooper. What she didn't realize at that time that the Empire believed in fireteams: troopers always came in pairs.
So from this point forward, she had to live with a bounty on her head, which narrowed her possibilities even further raising the stakes on her previously self-imposed exile.
It was only a matter of time when she ran into a firefight that took place with some civilians and the Empire's troops. They turned out to be working for the Rebel Alliance. Maranai soon realized that this was her place: the material underdog fighting, because they had the moral superiority.
That's how she ended up on Kashyyyk again.
Motivation
Her sense of honour, her humiliation because of her addiction.
