Background
Tavi Kylrana had a rather unconventional childhood in comparison to most Togruta youths.
Her parents, Jerik and Vess Kylrana, were former slaves belonging to a wealthy spice dealer on Kessel. Since their owner had banned any sort of fraternization between slaves, Vess and Jerik had to keep their marriage a secret. Unfortunately, their relationship was eventually discovered. Wanting to make an example of them, their owner sent them to work in the mines, knowing both wouldn’t last more than a few months.
Jerik knew that they had to escape soon or die. He enlisted the help of a few fellow slaves he had befriended, ensuring their freedom as well- Skeeb Geero, a Rodian mechanic; Kibbo, a very large and imposing Wookiee; and Brom Urriatt, a Lasat with a murky past.
Together, they managed to stow away on a spice transport, hijack it, and make off with thousands of credits worth of spice as well as the begrudging pilot. They needed one, after all.
After abandoning the ship, they had to lay low on the outskirts of the outer rim for a while. Jerik and Vess didn’t like having a hefty target on their backs, but they managed.
Deciding that their talents would be more useful if they stayed together, the motley crew began thinking up ways to make a living. Using some of the credits from the stolen spice, they bought a transport ship that Skeeb modified to fit their needs.
They called it the Ravager. Using the rest of their credits they managed to convince a few of Skeeb and Brom's contacts to join them- ones they claimed would be loyal as long as they kept the credits coming.
Over the next few years they roamed the galaxy, making the most of every profitable opportunity that came their way, whether it be a spice raid or
smuggling illegal goods.
They also made use of Skeeb's extensive mechanical knowledge, occasionally selling whatever illegally modified piece of tech he could come up with. In time, the Ravager became something of a roving chop shop. Eventually they expanded, opening up a shop in Mos Espa disguised as an unassuming restaurant.
Things went relatively well for a while. However, things changed for the Kylranas when Vess became pregnant.
Tavi and her twin brother Ajak came into the world in the chaos of a rather nasty battle between the Ravager and some spice traders. Their mother would tease them about their poor timing later.
The crew of the Ravager, while at first unsure about the prospect of having children aboard, were soon wrapped around Tavi and Ajak's tiny fingers.
Jerik and Vess tried their best to give them a good childhood, despite being entangled in a lifestyle that was inherently unsuitable for children. They were constantly on the move, so the children spent most of their time aboard the Ravager and occasionally at the home Jerik had purchased on Tatooine.
Growing up, Ajak was always shadowing Kibbo and Gruck, the muscle of the Ravager crew. Meanwhile, Tavi spent a lot of time in Skeeb's workshop both on the ship and in Mos Espa, seeming to share his affinity for mechanics. She eventually became his de facto apprentice, taking on her own projects and fulfilling orders when the shop got especially busy.
Her favorite achievement thus far is her Droid companion- BT-02, aka Two-Bit (BT-01 was a catastrophic failure). He's small, but he packs a punch.
In time, Ajak and Tavi got to come along on jobs, picking up on certain skills and adding to their parent's extensive network of connections in the criminal underworld.
With the fall of the Empire, business has picked up for the Kylranas. An abundance of rebel and empire ships (or pieces of them) float around the galaxy, components ripe for the picking.
A couple of years ago, Vess received a tip about a couple of profitable hauls- too good to turn down. Jerik and the majority of the Ravager crew went to one, while Vess and a couple crewmembers took a smaller ship and went to the other, expecting to bring back enough parts to last months. As it turns out, the tip was false. Jerik returned empty-handed and frustrated. Vess never returned, and she hasn't been seen since.
Jerik and the crew of the Ravager searched desperately for her. They eventually found the ship, floating half-destroyed and abandoned in Hutt space. There was no trace of her or the crewmates she had taken with her. Jerik was forced to return, needing to fulfill certain obligations.
Tavi's decided to reinvestigate, looking into old leads and hoping to dig up new ones.
She's had some mishaps so far in her journey- most notably, an unpleasant encounter with a Zygerrian slaver that ended with her sabotaging his ship and freeing his would-be slaves.
Ah, well. He had it coming. Her parents always encouraged her to think on her feet. After all, who knows what else the galaxy has in store?
