Background

1. How did you discover your force sensitivity?
A: Veran grew up entirely on the Ring of Kaphrene, and never made it planetside until after he came of age. Destitution required Veran to help his father, Kelden, repairing smaller vehicles and starships at one of the landing port. The Force manifested around a particular engine that Veran was working on, who misinterpreted the aura as dangerous chemical fumes and an electrical static charge in the air. He reported it to his father, who chastised him for "crying wolf" after evacuating the area and discovering that he couldn't find anything wrong with the engine.

2. Describe a moment where you fell prey to your moral weakness or experienced a tragedy/horror that still haunts you.
A: Veran continued to periodically feel these manifestations around different ships and speeders, but avoided them as much as possible out of fear. Fear of the unknown, and fear of his father should he report another falsely dangerous situation. However, one unreported situation did indeed prove to be the force warning Varen of danger, which killed many and destroyed much in the subsequent explosion. The toll weighs heavily on Veran, who remains terrified of the consequences if others realized he had known of the danger but said nothing.

3. How did you come to join the NJO?
A: Years later, Veran was assigned to work on the ship of a passing Jedi. The ship, being so tied to the New Jedi Order and its pilot, connected with Veran more strongly than any before it. The Jedi sensed this, and ultimately made a deal with Veran's father to take the boy to the Academy under the pretence of hiring him as a mechanic for the Temple. Despite the strained relationship, Kelden jumped at the opportunity to give his son a better life, and agreed quickly. Veran discovered that he was actually intended to train at the temple on the way.

4. Name one NPC your character has a strong connection with. This could be a family member, a friend, a work contact, or a bitter rival.
A: Veran and his father, Kelden, have a strained relationship. Both of them were always too busy with work to afford time with each other, and Veran never had a childhood. The circumstances of their separation (Veran heading to the Jedi Temple) has only complicated their relationship further, and Veran has not yet come to terms with the situation.

5. Describe a moment in your life where you demonstrated your moral strength despite adversity.
A: Sensing an easy mark, Kelden began to up-sell a client on a particular kind of engine oil. Young Veran, seeing an opportunity to show his father how well he was learning, corrected Kelden during the sales pitch. Kelden quickly changed gears and saved face with the customer, but punished Veran afterwards for losing the sale.

Motivation

CAUSE: HELP THE HELPLESS
- In a galaxy full of momentous events and desperate struggle, it is all too easy to forget the poor, the weak, and the downtrodden. The character seeks to give a voice to the voiceless, and help those who can not help themselves.

Morality

Score: 69

STRENGTH: CAUTION
- The character possess commendable prudence, willing to always look before he leaps into a new situation. Their forward-thinking ways may have saved their allies from dangerous situations on numerous occasions.

WEAKNESS: FEAR
- The line between caution and fear is a thin one. Sometimes the character spends too much time concerned about the potential problems of a situation to act in that situation at all. At other times, his caution causes him to flee when the danger presents itself, though bolder action might reap real rewards.

Description

Nature (Wants to trust, help) vs Nurture (Look out for yourself)

Nervous Ticks: Cracking Knuckles, Polishing Tools. Tries to keep busy rather than give himself time to think.

Other Notes

MISSION LEADS & PROJECTS:

Jedi Squadron - Collected Data from Coruscant Temple Archives (2S1Th)

Knight Talos Relic - found and brought the Holocron of Shadows to the Temple. Also collected data from the Coruscant Temple Archives (3S1A)

Large Cache of Scanner-Fooling Crystal from Smuggling Trade-Off location. These crystals passively "blend in" or "dissipate" into the background noise of scanners, hiding their presence. ("Wheel of Fortune" and "Operation: Clean-Sweep" run by Stew)

Cao’matta, a Drabottan tomb raider, almost kidnapped a few acolytes in hopes that they'd be able to open a Dark-Side user's tomb on a Dxun, a moon of Onderon. ("Dxun and Dodgin'" run by Chimaera)

Veran is aware of a "Sanctuary" space, where the previous inhabitants of the Yavin Temple have departed to. ("Archeology Decoded" run by Kee)

Locked Datapad containing Froden's (Gang on Halmad) Inventory and Operations ("Concrete Jungle" by Kane)
- You can pull frequent mentions of a group referring to themselves as "Stathas" being responsible for many of the more valuable retrievals. Outside of the mention of frequent work the Froden provided for them, there is this passage: "Unsavory and brutish they may be, but they have always maintained the subtlety we requested on their expeditions and brought back our prize, as long as we had the credits they charged." (Written about the Stathas by the Froden)

CHARACTER BREAKTHROUGHS:

TRUSTING/UNDERSTANDING/COMMUNING WITH THE FORCE:
05/01/20 - (in progress) "Intent + Action = Result/Consequence", "Trust the Force", "Gauge all Options", lessons taught via/at log-crossing challenge during second mission - Master Jex (sp?)
05/04/20 - (minor) First positive commune with the Force was Moving the Stone during the Defence Challenge.
06/02/20 - (major) The darkness will always be there; There is no getting rid of it (no purity). You can only open yourself up to the Force, and prepare for what comes. It is not within your ability to control what power comes -- only (if and) how you choose to use that power.
09/06/20 - (major) The Force does indeed, guide both events and people. No more powerfully has he seen this in action as during his Padawan Trial, where the Force guided events around him to culminate in the retrieval of Knight Talos Relic's Lightsaber, and ultimately the whole-hearted commitment to living up to the Jedi during the final battle. The crystal has chosen him, the old lightsaber is a constant reminder for Veran to live as the Jedi before him did; To uphold the values of the Order and be worthy of the title of Jedi.

TRUSTING/BELIEVING IN ONESELF, TAKING CHARGE OF HIS OWN DESTINY:
05/05/20 - (in progress) Gave up on saving the Engineering Bay of the Imperial Raider.
05/06/20 - (in progress) Stepped out into danger to defend Rikkit. Also failed a fear check and hid from combat while teammates where in danger.
05/09/20 - (minor) Sees Bran having a similar arch with success/failure and confidence, which allows him to see his own challenges from a different perspective. Seeing Bran attempt actions despite the failure Bran expects ("putting himself out there") has taught Veran that he needs to do the same. Despite feeling like this is a lesson he has learned, Veran has not yet been able to put this lesson into practice and therefore this is a Minor breakthrough.
05/15/20 - (in progress) Pretty confident that he is not built for combat. Supportive roll, but unsure how this works with trying to do things he's not good at.
05/22/20 - (major) Confronted with the idea that he can not just tag along or skip by; That he must be able to step up and pull his own wait.
05/29/20 - (minor) Spoke up when he disagreed with the rest of the party. Stood his ground about "just because we don't like it, doesn't mean we can do anything about it."
06/07/20 - (minor) Veran has found Knight Johanna as a model of self-forgiveness, and that self-forgiveness is possible. She gives him hope that he may be able to forgive himself in the future for the Imperial Black-Ops mission.
06/20/20 - (minor) Chy'anthos seems fine, and has no issues with Veran/working with Veran. The only one remaining to forgive Veran is himself.
07/04/20 - (minor) Someone specifically asked him to lead in something; Something big and important (Mia, another Jedi Squadron). Veran would have thought it would take much longer -- like becoming a Knight -- before being trusted with that much leadership and responsibility. This is both encouraging and frightening, both due to his recent mistakes and because he doesn't feel like flying is something he's good at himself. Being asked to help... organize?/lead?/form? the squadron, means that someone sees potential in him.
08/08/20 - (major) Deceiving the guard patrol is the 2nd time Veran's attempted stepping up despite the personal danger -- and despite failing miserably the first time. This shows he's established enough confidence to exhibit this behaviour consistently. Succeeding like he did today will just perpetuate his ability (and soon, hopefully, his desire) to see opportunities where he can step up and beneficially aid the team, rather than feel like the "tag along".
08/19/20 - (minor) Veran was previously approached by Mia to organize a Jedi Squadron, in which he was quite concerned whether he was the correct person both in terms of Leadership and as well as Piloting ability. Today, he lead an extremely successful mission group, as well as found some huge success as a pilot during combat (thanks the Force)
