Background
Waawat "the Duke" Murr is the youngest of the eight Murr children. The Murr family owns many export-related businesses and dominates the local economy on one of Ithor's medium-sized herdships. Indeed, Waawat's overbearing mother and matriarch of the family, Yngaw Murr, was a merchantate* for the herdship. Although the herdship was not largest in Ithor's fleet, the Murrs controlled enough wealth to place them solidly in the aristocratic upper caste of Ithorian society. Relatively secular and business-minded in a highly spiritual society, the family was also continually embroiled in controversy, as much of their wealth came from exporting the fruits (both literal and metaphorical) of Ithor's exotic wilderness.
By the time Waawat metamorphosized, most of the family affairs were already well-managed. His mother ran the economy for the entire herdship, while his eldest sister, Priyataw, managed most of the family affairs. His older brothers and sisters kept themselves busy managing the various accounting and procurement challenges that came with running an export business. They used to joke that the only thing left for Waawat to do was talk.
And talk Waawat did: he filled his leisurely existence with spirited debate and the occasional drunken argument. It suited him well; Waawat was the most loquacious of his siblings, and despite his reputation for being something of a spoiled dilettante, his mother felt that he'd someday find a place managing the family's oft-troublesome public image. At University, Waawat became somewhat more interested in Ithorian politics, advocating a realistic view of an evolving galaxy and favoring the cultivation of Ithorian military power to hold the Empire at bay. Although this wasn't a popular viewpoint, Waawat argued from a place of newly-found pride in Ithor. Still, his beliefs existed more in theory than in practice, and Waawat spent more time talking than doing. Waawat's one act of real defiance was his decision to own and become proficient with a blaster - weapons were virtually absent in Ithorian society. At the time, this was more of a symbolic gesture, although Duke never regretted the decision, given the direction his life would soon turn.
Things changed when the Murr family, whose business ventures were under considerable duress owing to Imperial expansion, came up with a new business venture: They would offer tours of the Mother Jungle for an exorbitant price. Even Waawat was horrified at the blatant exploitation of Ithor's most sacred lands, and launched a succesful smear campaign against his own family. Although his mother had already paid the Commerce Council the bribes necessary to ensure an approval, Waawat turned public opinion so vehemently against the idea that the Council reneged on its corrupt promise and denied Waawat's family permission to monetize the Mother Jungle.
Enraged by Waawat's betrayal, his family cut him off entirely and more-or-less banned him from the herdship. Although Waawat was determined to show the family that their greed had gone too far, he felt powerless to deal with them on equal terms while still reliant on their wealth. With that, Waawat embraced his exile and set off to the Outer Rim, where he quickly learned that Ithorian pacificism doesn't go nearly as far in the lawless part of the galaxy. Still, for the enterprising, brave, and stupid, opportunities in the Outer Rim were plentiful, and Waawat, now going by his university nickname, "The Duke", felt that the dangerous region was his best shot at having an dynasty of his own.
* A Merchantate was the title conveyed by the Ithorians to the business leaders of an Ithorian Herdship. Each one of these individuals also possessed a vote on the herdship's commerce council.
Motivation
Ambition: Greed - Duke comes from a business family and knows that all progress flows from money. Duke doesn't hate his family, but he does feel that he needs a fortune of his own in order to treat with them as an equal rather than as a dependent. While his motivations aren't entirely altruistic, nor are they wholly selfless. Duke just honestly believes that money is the only way to truly get anything done, and so to make things right with his family (and in his mind, making things right amounts to making them see his point of view), he needs money. A lot of it.
Obligations
+15 Family: He has a wealthy, powerful merchantate family who feels he ruined their reputation and, potentially, their continuing fortune. They simultaneously want Duke to right the harm he has caused them while also wishing to thwart Duke's efforts to make his own way in the world.
Description
Duke stands just over seven feet tall; average height for an Ithorian, but towering over most humanoids. He is thin and lanky as far as Ithorians go, and usually wears thick, heavy clothing to fill out his physical presence. A life of relative leisure has left his leathery skin untanned and smooth, although his recent life in the Outer Rim has engendered a few scars and wrinkles.
Duke possesses the unusual Ithorian trait of oral multidexterity - he can control his two mouths separately. As a result, by using only one mouth to talk, he is able to speak Basic without the translation boxes commonly utilized by his species. Although Ithorians are notorious for speaking Basic with a strange, difficult-to-understand accent, Duke puts a great deal of effort into sounding "normal" when speaking Basic. Nevertheless, his Ithorese affectation sneaks through if he is tired or drunk.
Duke wields a DH-17 blaster he took from a dead Rebel soldier while learning one of the Outer Rim's many difficult lessons. He favors it over the more modern SE-14C, as the bulkier DH-17 is more comfortable for his extremely large hands.
