Background
Rana was born on a starship. Born amongst the stars. But her parents wanted nothing more than to never traverse the galaxy again, once they reached their new home on Trask. And though it would not be known to Rana until later in life, her hatching happened at great risk, to herself and to her family.
Her mother, a skilled starship technician, and her father, a classically-trained musician, had only embarked upon such an odyssey in order to “leave the old ways behind.” By establishing a new colony with like-minded individuals from their homeworld, they would be free from violent, ethically-dubious and otherwise harmful practices which her father attributed to the rise of “reactionary Rybet culture.”
And because the colony ship had to travel at sublight speeds — lightspeed had proven dangerous for their unborn offspring — the trip to Trask was long and perilous. But thanks to Rana's father, her family passed the time pleasantly enough, with music — music to which young Rana would soon contribute unique vocalizations. In fact, Rana sang earlier than she could speak!
But because her parents sought to sever their roots, like any ribbit-rebellious child would, Rana began to seek out said roots and cultural ties instead. Not only amongst her own people, but amongst ALL people. Soon after settling on Trask, Rana began devouring any folktales she could get a hold of, fascinated by the oral histories of the many species they encountered at the planet's seaside spaceport.
Over time, she developed a style of overtone singing that took full advantage of the Frog ability to manipulate the size and shape of resonant cavities in their mouth and throat. Rana began composing songs based upon the folklore she'd learned, but set to "modern" electronic music she generated with the space-theremin her parents fashioned from spare parts.
Then, having developed substantial piloting acumen thanks to her mother's familiarity with starships, Rana took to the stars in earnest, taking astronav jobs with Quarren and Mon Cal shipping crews. After all, there were many stories still to be heard, told, and sung.
And so, as she traveled the stars seeking to learn as many of the galaxy's stories as she could, Rana sang songs of postmodern pastiche, making something new which honored the old, but which, she hoped was also something else entirely.
She's even gotten up to no good. Getting mixed up with the "wrong element." By transporting illicit cargo every now and again, sure. But even worse? By forming a rock band of course. And after assembling a motley crew from various ports-of-call, Rana feels she's found her true calling. She's a pilot by trade, but a storyteller (and would-be rockstar) at heart!
Motivation
To learn as much galactic lore as she can, so that she preserve it in song — thus (subconsciously) planting cultural roots because she feels she had none.
Obligations
LEARNING LORE / CHASING THE PAST (DUTYBOUND 5 ) - Due to feeling she had no real "roots" of her own, Rana goes out of her way to learn about various species' oral histories. There is no story that Rana does not want to learn and transform into song. The thing is... she's no *real* scholar. And so, Rana may lose sight of mission objectives by become enrapt by tales told, or choose to follow the prospect of learning more about a given species or culture's history even at personal or professional risk to her.
DEBT 5 - She and her band owe a hefty sum of credits on their starship.
Description
Warm and charismatic, Rana Rockmore is able to connect with others through sheer force of personality alone. Her large eyes and mouth are immediately endearing, and as a full-figured Frog, Rana has the build to belt song after song.
