Varek grew up on a large civilized planet in the Expansion Region. After finishing studies his promising future as a mechanical engineer was abruptly halted when he was drafted into military service. To help win a war of conquest with a neighboring system, his homeworld's military found his mechanical aptitude especially desirable. Ripped from his comfortable life, he was sent to a forward operating space port to oversee the maintenance of a sizeable starfighter fleet. There, Maintenance Lt. Varek witnessed the brutality and senselessness of the war, and in time hatched his plan to escape. Forging transport documentation, he commandeered a small transport vessel ahead the confusion of a large scale assault; fleeing the war-torn star system to the Outer Rim. With a sizeable bounty on his head to return him to his homeworld and face the consequences of his desertion, Varek became an outlaw and stranger to everything he once knew and loved. Without the ability to return to his planet, his career, or his family, Varek put his mechanical and military skills to use in the more undeveloped, reaches of the galaxy, often finding himself in the employ of smugglers, warlords, and traders, in a constant struggle for credits, comfort, and anonymity.
