Background

Kaath Halcorr had a middle-class upbringing on Centares, a mid-Rim world with a significant Gotal population. The ambitious young Gotal hungered for more of two things: credit and status; he became as adept at using credits to buy status as he was at using status to buy credits. Striking out on his own, Kaath found work in the "Sophistication" gallery on Obroa-skai, developing contacts and business relationships with Imperial bureaucrats who fancied themselves patrons of the arts. His wheeling and dealing, including his willingness to engage in highly profitable but incredibly risky ventures with artworks of uncertain provenance, eventually brought his reputation in the Galaxy's fine art circles to ruin. Kaath's fall from grace, as he sees it, came from a flaw in his character - the one time he mixed business and pleasure.

Motivation

Kaath is motivated by the almighty galactic credit - he reasons that he can only buy his way back into the good graces of the Galaxy's art-loving community, which means he has to use every means at his disposal - legal and otherwise - to earn hard currency.

Kaath is also motivated by his lost love - the woman whose reputation he left in ruins during an art swindle gone wrong. Though there is little chance of ever repairing his relationship with Shrey, he still finds himself unable to put her behind him, and still attempts to win her over in his own way.

Obligations

Blackmail - Imperial Security Bureau agent Zekra Fol can prove that Kaath sold a forged Miraluka tapestry to a Black Sun underboss, and won't let Kaath forget it. Fol shows up at the most inconvenient times, threatening to inform the Black Sun gangster about the forgery unless Kaath turns over information on some of his clientele within the Imperial bureaucracy or otherwise perform distasteful tasks that she needs doing.

Betrayal - Kaath partnered with Shrey Ordassa, a Togrutan academic and one-time curator of the Figg & Associates Art Museum on Cloud City, in an elaborate art fraud involving corrupt Imperial bureaucrat Marus Greyson. Kaath fell in love with Ordassa during the course of the swindle, which involved laundering a forged Okfili art object through the gallery, with Kaath embezzling money to finance the forgery's commission. When the ruse was eventually discovered (Greyson's money having already changed hands), Kaath reluctantly left his lover Shrey holding the bag.

Description

A male Gotal approaching middle age, Kaath is stocky and tall like most members of his species. His shaggy brown hair is beginning to grey out, particularly near his head cones. His eyes are orange-red. Kaath has a worlds-weary demeanour that he can smother with a few choice words of smooth talk.

Other Notes

Kaath's head cones are finely-tuned sensory organs used to detect almost the entirety of the electromagnetic spectrum. Once per encounter as a maneuver, Kaath may sense the presence and current emotional states of all living things within short range of himself.
