Background
Niko was once an tournament fighter, while he learned how to take a beating and dish it out too, he also learned how to play up the drama and rile the crowd up, so that even when he lost they'd keep coming back for more of him. To further improve his skills as a showman he got into acting, if he could seamlessly recreate the scenes of the greatest Pantoran plays and holovids, making the crowd almost think they were there, then he could rise to the top, fame and riches would be guaranteed! However as he moved from small time gigs in Pantora to greater stages out in the galaxy, he came face to face with the Empire.
Motivation
Niko was never much into politics in his youth, he much preferred to train, read and play out old stories than to argue about Appeasers, Republicans or Expansionists and what the grumpy old men leading them were thinking, but the stories of the Jedi and the Old Republic always made an impression on him.
When he traveled the galaxy he got to see just how the Empire ran things behind the scenes, and slowly but surely everything he was taught back then came to the forefront of his mind. By the time he learned of the existence of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, he was ready to go all in, in the big event of the year, he took the stage and publicly denounced the Empire and all it stood for, spouted the virtues of a Republic and gave a call to action to the audience, to take a stand against tyranny.
He barely made it out, a wanted fugitive, he then decided to seek this Rebel Alliance, for they were his best bet if he wanted to make a difference against the Empire, and perhaps while at it he could earn himself a place in the stories amongst the heroes who would take down the Empire and restore freedom to the galaxy.
