Background
Growing up on a mid-size colony just outside Hutt Space, Garret learned most of his peacekeeping skills from his father, who preceded him as the town's marshal. Included in their lessons, were his father's views on compromise, and how it had absolutely no place in a lawman's profession. Unfortunately, those views were little use to Garret, when a notorious murderer, Tekryn, cut his father's throat on his way home from work. Far from hiding his deed, the Tekryn boasted about his deeds, terrifying any who would have otherwise taken the position of marshal, leaving only Garret, barely into his twenties, to take up his father's mantle.
Lacking resources, and with Tekryn surrounded by his loyal gang, Garret had little hope of bringing his father's killer to justice... until a courier arrived at his new office. The courier delivered a holo messenger, carrying a missive from a Hutt named Ulal. Apparently interested in the colony as a new node in his smuggling network, and uninterested in more thuggish methods of persuasion, Ulal offered an enticing deal: one-time assistance in dealing with Tekryn's gang, then a five-year truce, during which Ulal's agents would limit their activity to smuggling, and Garret would ignore their non-disruptive activities in favor of the rising violent crime rate.
With Ulal the Hutt's assistance, Garret succeeded in bringing Tekryn in, eventually shipping him off to the Sector Authority, gaining a measure of renown in the process. Though he quickly burned this political capital, he leveraged it well, managing to build the marshal's office, recruiting a few deputies, and training and equipping them to effectively combat the increasingly violent gangs. However, it as only a matter of time before an exceptionally inquisitive deputy got curious about the colony's lack of Hutt entanglement, despite their population growth and proximity to Hutt Space.
After several weeks of investigation, Garret's deal was revealed, and he was removed from his position as marshal. Though he was barred from any leadership position in the colony, and shunned by the citizenry, he was allowed to leave without consequence, as one last recognition of his work. Unfortunately, Ulal the Hutt was less easily escaped. As Garret had only been able to protect the Hutt's interests for 3 of the 5 agreed-upon years, Ulal decreed that Garret would take a more active role in Ulal's activities for the remaining 2 years of the contract.
Motivation
Reward: Moral
Though he wasn't proud of the uneasy alliances he made during his time as Marshal, Garret believed that the work he did, ridding his town of violent and disruptive criminal, was worth the personal guilt he had to shoulder. Even after being ousted from town, Garret believes he made the right call, and is convinced that sometimes, justice requires hard decisions, and questionable allies. Working for the Hutts is just another hard decision, and he'll use their resources to bring his own brand of justice.
Obligations
Debt: 5
Garret owes Ulal the Hutt: he failed to deliver on his agreement. They had agreed on a period of 5 standard years, that the Hutt's agents would restrict their activity in his town to smuggling and money-laundering, and Garret would prevent any inquiries or investigations into Ulal's agents. Unfortunately, their deal was revealed after only 3 years, and once Garret was removed from his position, Ulal held Garret in breach of their agreement.
Disgraced: 5
Guilty of ignoring Hutt agents, in exchange for promises of non-violent activity from said agents, and the opportunity to pursue non-affiliated, and more disruptive criminals. This agreement came to light, and though the colony leadership called for a replacement, he was allowed to leave unhindered, in recognition of the work he had done. Despite his belief that he made the right choice, given a difficult situation, he seeks to leave this mark on his reputation behind.
Description
A wiry-built man in his mid-twenties, Garret stands 1.8 meters, with copper hair and watchful grey eyes. His sharp features typically display a sardonic expression, one eyebrow slightly raised, as though mentally questioning everything he hears, and a thin blaster scar streaking just under his right ear.
Garret usually wears durable black trousers and a light linen shirt under a heavy knee-length coat. While a combat knife is barely visible peeking out the top of one of his combat boots, his blaster pistol often goes unseen in a shoulder holster under his coat. While his backpack holds most of his possessions, a pair of binders, a breath mask, and some stimpacks all occupy spaces on his utility belt.
When in a space he's more comfortable with, Garret foregoes his coat, leaving his shirt tucked in and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing another blaster scar, this one a direct hit to his left forearm, and a tattoo in Aurebesh script on his right forearm, reading "The debts of the dead are paid. The living now take up the balance."
