Background

Kort Bozai was born to rule.

Or at least, that's what his father always told him.

Since the beginning of his life, Kort had been trained as a warrior under his father Ulster Bozai. Kort was raised on the moon Concordia, where his parents had been banished after fighting against the group now known as the New Mandalorians during the Mandalorian Civil War, 2 years before his birth.

Ulster had craved power from a young age due to the low rank of Clan Bozai. He was not as formidable as the other warriors of his House, so he learned from a young age how to cause chaos, and how to use that chaos to rise within the ranks. He married Kort's mother, Layna Vizsla, in hopes that her relation to the current leader of Death Watch would raise his offspring's potential status.

What he did not count on was Layna abandoning him and the boy.

She did not disapprove of Ulster's early introduction of weapons training to the boy, he was Mandalorian after all. However, as time went on, she noticed that Ulster would make Kort practice with blades above all other weaponry. One day, when she believed that Ulster was being too hard on the boy, she attempted to intervene. Ulster became full of rage, as if a switch had been flipped inside of him. He chastised the woman for being soft on the boy, his face red as he screamed at her. During this rant, he let slip his true intention, "How will the boy ever take the Darksaber when you treat him like a delicate flower?" Not realizing what he was saying until it was too late, he stopped speaking. The damage, however, had already been done. The wielder of the Darksaber, Pre Vizsla, was Layna's cousin. She was hit with a sickening realization, that Ulster did not love her, and perhaps never had. He had married her for her bloodline. She was just a tool, a means to an end. When Kort and Ulster woke the next morning, Layna was gone, never to return.

The next decade or so of Kort's life was a blur of weapons training, Mandalorian history lessons, basic schooling, and more training. Ulster shaped Kort into one of the finest swordsman in the galaxy, to the point of being able to defeat Ulster himself in combat. Ulster was a fine warrior, but far from the best in terms of Mandalorian culture.

Eventually, Death Watch began to make their moves to take back Mandalore, and Ulster began to form plans of his own within them. Ulster joined Pre and the rest of Death Watch in their campaigns, leaving Kort with a hired Mandalorian swordsmaster to continue his training. He became very close to his master, seeing him as a surrogate father due to the honest affection he received from his master's compliments.

As time went on and Kort's skill grew, he did not receive much information regarding the exploits of Death Watch, until one day his father arrived without warning to claim him. He told Kort the time he had been training for was near. Death Watch was about to make their move and take Mandalore with help from some outsiders. Ulster told Kort that he was old enough now to take part in the plan, and filled him in on what they were doing. Kort and Ulster were part of a group that would travel to Mandalore and rescue civilians from an upcoming criminal syndicate attack. Kort was surprised, knowing he had trained to kill his whole life, getting the opportunity to save people felt... good.

They took part in the rescue parties, everything going according to plan perfectly. Soon after, Satine Kryze was taken into custody and Pre Viszla declared himself Mandalore. Kort did not have much time to enjoy the thrill of helping others, because his father took him aside and told him it was time. He would escort Kort to the throne room, Kort would issue the challenge, and he would *not* fail.

Time seemed to slip away from his grasp as Kort retreated into himself. His father led him to the throne room, pride emanating from him. Ulster followed Kort for the first time in Kort's life, and Kort took a position to the side of the throne with other Deathwatch members that had gathered. They sat there for for what felt like hours, but Kort's helmet HUD informed him it had only been a couple of minutes. Ulster finally jabbed Kort in the ribs, sending a clear message. Kort took a long breath, a single step... and then the room's hologram activated. The image showed a Mandalorian floating in air, choking for some unknown reason. Kort instantly recognized the man as the guard to the throne room itself.

The door to the Throne room opened, and in the doorway stood two men, with the hovering, choking guard in front of them. Suddenly, the guard flew across the room, slamming on the ground and sliding to a stop at Pre Viszla's feet.

"I challenge you, one warrior to another! And only the strongest shall rule Mandalore!" The newcomer bellowed, and Kort felt a sense of relief wash over him. The Zabrak had declared his challenge, Kort could not impose his own on top of it.

"So be it, give him his weapon." Pre announced, and the nearby Bo-Katan flashed a look of hesitance before tossing a cylinder to the man. Kort did not realize the cylinder was actually a lightsaber hilt until the man ignited his fiery blade. "For Mandalore!" Pre yelled, and rushed to meet his foe.

Kort wondered if the newcomer had the ability to hold his own with Pre, but that question was thrown out of the window as he watched the fight unfold. Pre had managed to put up resistance, but it was clear this other swordsman was on an entirely different level. One far past Kort's own abilities.

Kort watched in horror as the newcomer disarmed Pre, savagely beating him into submission. With a final kick, he knocked Pre to the foot of the throne, calling the Darksaber to him with what Kort had been trained to recognize as the Force. Was this man a Jedi? He did not fight like any Jedi Kort had heard of.

He ignited the Darksaber, staring at into it's obsidian blade. Pre uttered, "Like you said, only the strongest..."
The man lifted the Darksaber above his head.
"...shall rule."
The blade fell.

There was a moment of uneasy silence, with Mandalorians around the room between mixed states of confusion and disgust. The man raised the Darksaber above his head and roared, "I claim this sword, and my rightful place as leader of Deathwatch."

Kort began to retreat, falling in behind the standing Bo-Katan as others, including his father, began to kneel. "Never! No outsider will ever rule Mandalore!" Bo-Katan replied.

"If you will not join me, you will die." No malice, no hate. Just fact. Kort was astonished to see his own father, now pointing a blaster at him. His Mandalorian helmet revealing no emotions.
Bo-Katan retorted, "You're all traitors!"
"Unfortunately for you, history will not see it that way. EXECUTE THEM!"

The next thing Kort knew was gunfire, and explosions. They fought their way out of the palace, their former compatriots now becoming their pursuers, Ulster among them.

The following days went by in a haze. Everything Kort knew, everything he had been trained for was now in ashes. Most of Bo-Katan's group stuck together, trying to form a new plan to take Mandalore back, but Kort was never a part of them to begin with. This shared experience may have gained him some allies, but they were not necessarily his friends. He thought back to the one person in his life who had actually seemed to care about him, his mother. He spent that night scrubbing the Deathwatch paint off his Beskar armor, revealing the rough bronze and silver color of the metal underneath. Realizing he had no place among this group, he gathered his belongings and left, determined to find his mother and a place he might one day call home.

Years have now passed, and he works as a mercenary in the outer rim in order to earn a living and possibly gain information about his mother's whereabouts.
