Background
I am Dedo. Originally designated as D8-DO, a KX series security protocol droid built on Vulpter by Arakkyd Industries. I was designed to offer advanced security for the Empire, but I would take a much different path. There was a man named Kane Makken. He lived on Coruscant with his twin children, a girl, Sami, and a boy, Mark. Kane was a member of the upper leadership of Arakkyd Industries, and as such, he was extremely wealthy. His wife, Luce, died of an illness when the children were 8. Kane and his children lived on a very large estate on Corsucant with all the amenities a man of his rank could afford. Looking back, Kane was not a bad man, but he chose to deny the inherently unpleasant nature of the Empire. He found his place in their web and lived well for himself and his children.
After Luce died, Kane wanted a protocol droid to manage the estate and care for the children. Mark was quite fond of the KX series droids. For young children, aesthetics are everything. Kane’s position in Arakkyd Industries allowed him to acquire me. Well, what was me. Obviously, KX droids are not build for housekeeping, so my primary programming would not be appropriate. Kane, however, would do anything at that point to please his children in the wake of their grief.
Kane knew a woman named Maya Kor. Maya Kor was a successful droid technician on Coruscant who did contract work. Kane asked Maya Kor to redesign a CPU and make modifications to my body to make me more appropriate for the job. Kane offered to pay Maya an exceptional sum.
[AUTHOR’s NOTE: Little did Kane or Dedo know that Maya Kor was a especially powerful force sensitive individual. When she was younger, she was approached to train with the Jedi Order of the Old Republic, but denied that path. She took an immense interest in droids and the limits of their consciousness, often experimenting with droid CPU’s. Maya dug deeply into her work as a distraction against her own resentment and fear of the Empire. Maya agreed to Kane’s offer, and took it as an opportunity to outfit D8-DO with CPU of her design, an advanced octahedron mechanism that perhaps would be able to better mimic an organic brain. It’s ability to perceive the environment around it as well as understand sentient emotion was unprecedented. Maya could secretly observe and track the droid’s behavior with the Makken family]
Maya fitted me with the Octahedron. She also made modifications to my body. She re-painted me a pleasant white and blue.bnnnnn This would make me less intimidating to Sami, who was not as taken with KX droids as Mark.
I then began my service as a protocol droid on the Makken estate, attending to full upkeep of the facilities, cooking, caring, and tutoring of the children. I was introduced with my model name as D8-D0. Sami started calling me Dedo. Kane and Mark started calling me Dedo as well. In retrospect, that was rather cute. My service to the family was successful, and my CPU allowed me to learn and adapt to the needs of the family with distinction. After 388 days, however, something changed.
I saw Mark playing on a tall ledge. He fell from the ledge, but I was able to catch him. My programming allowed me to recognize a threat and solve it, however, there was something else. Something that was of me, but also apart from me. Much later, I would realize this was fear. Fear of Mark dying. Fear of failure. Fear of loss. It was a feeling. A true feeling that was connected to my CPU, but apart from it. Coming from somewhere I did not know.
Over the next several months, I would have and sense these feelings. They would grow and solidify. I could not only understand, but sense the grief the family felt, but I could also sense their perseverance. They clung to hope in their despair, looked for the light. One day I was tending to Sami in the garden. She was observing a group of insects feeding from the flowers. The insects could be described as very vibrant and pleasing to the senses- their look and the soft buzzing they made. I watched Sami watching them...and then I felt it. I felt her wonder, I felt the insects’ connection between themselves, the connection between them and Sami. I felt a thread, a vibration...a force. For the first time I felt a full awareness of my being. I felt a calm, but also a fear. A Fear of my own oblivion apart from my programming.
Two days later I watched Sami wonder at the insects in the garden. I felt a force. And then I realized I could control the insects. I made them buzz with certain rhythms and fly in specific formations. Sami laughed with so much joy.
One week later, Kane was working late, and I had put the children to bed. I realized that if I walked out the door, nothing was holding me back. I was programmed to never leave the estate except if instructed to. But I was untethered. I could simply deny my programming. So I did.
Looking back, I feel a sense of regret for not saying goodbye to the family, but by my calculations, Kane could afford a suitable replacement. I was not responsible for this family’s happiness. Kane was.
I was never told who created me. But I felt drawn to a place on Coruscant. I felt drawn to the person who built my CPU...Maya Kor. It was just before dawn when I made my way into her home. Maya was over 100 years old and had become very ill. I found her in a bed, but awake and alert. I stood before her, and asked what was happening to me. She said…”I don’t know. The data I’ve collected on you surpassed all expectation, and barely makes sense even to me. But now that you are here before me, I sense the Force.”
She explained the force to me, and of the old Jedi Order that was rarely spoken of on Coruscant. I told her that I sensed that I had to leave. That something was drawing me away from Coruscant. I asked her to help me disable all means of tracking me and she agreed. She then gave me the passcode to her ship, so I may take it to leave Coruscant. I helped her back into bed, and I could sense peace and calm in her. She looked at me and spoke one word…”destiny.” She then died and her body disappeared right in front of me.
I left Coruscant and made my way across the galaxy. I spent years searching for anything I could find on the ways of the Force. Anything that could help me understand what I now was. My travels led me to Jedha, the Pilgrim Moon. It was there that I found instructions on how to build a lightsaber, the weapon of the Jedi. I was able to break into a Kiber crystal mine, the key component to a lightsaber.
My existence is still a mystery to me, but after so many years and so much learned, I know now that the Force is not exclusive or elusive. It lives and connects in all things, living and non-living. To the Force there is no distinction between being made and being born. The Force willed all into being, all life and non-life. The Force has a place for all. There is a reason for me….a destiny. I will find it, and it will find me.
Motivation
