Background

- Native to Dathomir, part of a relatively isolated subset of a Nightsister clan. Lives in a small village being prepared to eventually join the Nightsisters
- An antagonizing force (pirates, bounty hunters, slavers, he wasn't sure and never got a chance to know. At such a young age, they were simply bad people with weapons) catches the village by surprise while they sleep and the stronger Force users are gone. It's a slaughter
- A Jedi, here for entirely different reasons, senses the danger and arrives too late. Vallan's mother convinced the Jedi to take him with her last words.
- Vallan is inducted into the Jedi order at age 6, not quite too old but a little behind others. Learning about the force in the Jedi way after learning about it in the Nightsister way leads to conflicting ideals and he never finds stability or proficiency in the things other Jedi find to be easy. However, he has a very strong sense of self and it shows through his abilities to enhance himself through the Force.
- Given his strengths and weaknesses, and - this is speculation on Vallan's part - possible prejudices and worries of having a Dathomirian "witch" with all the others, Vallan is a quick pick for the Exploration Corps when becoming a Padawan.
- Works hard and reaches Knighthood just in time to be drafted into the Clone Wars
