Background
Middle Class Struggles
Opportunity Knocks
Ren Bliysia was born on Coruscant, like untold millions-she grew up in the expansive neighborhood of Rainworks, level 789, among other Nautolans in a 'sunken district'-a place for aquatics to live in comfort. In recent years, the Sunken Districts had been steadily drained by the Empire to make way for landbound stormtrooper patrols and human settlements, economic and political systems had been arrayed against them, and Nautolans found it increasingly difficult to find good paying work...
Enter Ren. A young Nautolan-a rainworker in training, often lazy but focused when something excited her-good at making friends (maybe too good), and to put it lightly 'a distracting presence'. Reckless, obedient to an extent, but always chafing against authority when they weren't watching. She eventually emerged to be somewhat better at getting others to like her, than actually doing any real work herself. It was likely she would never have been entirely happy as a Rainmaker (Nautolans and other aquatics are/were traditionally heavily involved in managing Coruscants engineered rainfall and atmosphere) in the best of all possible worlds. She finally got fed up with the entire mess when her supervisor insisted she use a new babbling aquatic security droid to survey her work, rather her much more familiar older one, and decided it was time to take her kinds 'traditional' pilgrimage to Glee Anselm (the Nautolan Homeworld) just to escape the stress. The Old Ones had always been talking of how beautiful it was-even if most of them had never even been there.
What was supposed to be a 'short fun vacation' turned, in a series of events, flying as far away from home as she could get-not entirely by choice. This eventually ended up with an explosive landing on Jixun-literally-as the Space Pirate Vayga the Hutts bloated pleasure/war barge shed its escape pods all over the planets surface while being chased through low orbit by a cloud of angry TIE fighters. Inside the scattered pods was a good deal of Vaygas loot, and her menagerie of exotic pets-which included interesting beasts and interesting people, one of which had been Ren.
Having received something of a 'crash' course in crime (heh), Ren was able to recently find work in Varlos crew as a minor majordomo, velvet glove, friendly messenger, part time musico, and occasionally blatant distraction. After all, who can resist those big dark eyes? She's in turn, attracted to his ambition and his loyalty to those who serve him-and has a hard time resisting any strong personality-such things served his previous employer (The Hutts, not the Empire) well, and she's intrigued enough to stick around and see what happens, sensing a momentous change in the air and excited to be part of it.
Motivation
Ambition/Wanderlust: Technically, Ren is still on her way to Glee Anselm, to undertake her peoples long neglected tradition of returning the waters of the Homeworld and washing away the stains on their spirit. She's just taking a slight...detour...to the other side of the Galaxy. A youth spent in a literally shrinking habitat, penned in by the Imperials, created a slowly broiling anxiety that pushed her to blow off steam in ways that could be considered unhealthy, such as trolling bars and finding herself in bad relationships. For a good portion of her life, however, she grudgingly obeyed the increasingly impossible laws, her increasingly obstinate superiors, and tried to be a good and productive citizen. But instead of getting used to it, she cracked. She fled-and now she lives to keep moving, keep seeing new things, meet new people-never wanting to be in the same place too long, always afraid of seeing the walls closing in, the water getting lower, the people getting boring, the troopers marching closer...now she's swimming free, and knows deep down, she's never going to stop.
Obligations
[5] Vayga the Hutt (Favor)
[5] Seeking Deep Water (Thrill Seeker)
...
It's odd to find a somewhat decent Hutt in the galaxy, but they do apparently exist. Vayga may be a ruthless, amoral space pirate, but she's also true to her word (to the letter) and loyal to those who serve under her (as long as they remember their place) in a way very unlike those of her kind are usually seen as. She is still quite a scoundrel, but prefers jolly cooperation to outright violence-her usual modus operandi is to 'politely invite' (with her ships absurd amount of guns casually pointing in their direction) a lone traveling ship on the star lanes to dock on her vessel, The Loyalists Goblet, and join her never ending space party through the stars.
Of course, if you ever want to leave the party, it's simply polite to give your host a gift. Half your cargo, a promise of a favor, a 'small easy job', a sum of credits and valuables, an interesting artifact with a story behind it-even a juicy rumor. Or simply, a useful or interesting person. Ren found herself, unfortunately, offered as part as a package deal as the smuggler she had foolishly hired to ferry her to Glee Anselm bought his way off the ship. Vayga was overjoyed to accept another young pretty face for her crew of 'interesting friends'.
Ren was often a confident, not quite a prisoner, almost an employee, and sometimes a slave, but treated as all four as often as Vayga needed. Nevertheless, Ren found Vayga to be somewhat decent (for a Hutt, is always the sad addendum) and was treated well-especially when the Hutt invaded a small asteroid prison simply to retrieve some of her 'interesting friends', one of which was Ren, from Corsec imprisonment due to a job gone sour.
Ren is free now, of course, as a result of hastily ejecting from the Loyalists Goblet (The fact that Vayga installed actual working escape pods for her crew, and that they didn't explode upon hitting the ground as a way to punish cowardice, was a fact some other Hutts considered very odd) and working in a new crew-but, she still feels she owes Vayga and her 'old family' something indefinite, but real-Vayga gave her a running start and a bit of education in a business she's sure would have killed her or worse ten times over otherwise. Not that she's interested in going back-that sort of life is too much like work for her, and she's always felt the implication of a shackle was nearly as bad as an actual one...but, she still feels an obligation. Vayga always kept her word after all. Said it was important to be known as someone who kept their word. And for better or worse, she's taken that lesson to heart.
Of course in this line of work, it's all about the little details. The best way to avoid paying debts is to simply make sure the person you owe things to can't find you. So while Ren is totally going to pay Vayga back, for sure, well, she's not exactly going out of her way to contact her either.
...
Ren has always chafed at being controlled, possibly because she's not good at resisting the commands of others. She tends to go along with things even if she's not entirely happy with them, and this has lead to predictable loop of going along to get along, and then rebelling to blow off the steam. It led to her fleeing a mostly stable life in the core, and now she's simply begun it all over again with her new gang. Unlike her previous job, however, her new life has allowed much looser restraint on her actions. Still-this has always resulted in reckless, thrill seeking behavior, and it becomes worse the longer she goes without indulging herself. This occasionally results in trouble, be it in a bad impulse to take a needless risk in the moment, people she's inadvertently coerced or manipulated showing up to bother her, or some stunt or wild night she pulled coming back to bite her. When bored or feeling under pressure or confinement (be it social or literal), she can become edgy, moody, easily distracted, and generally unpleasant to be around.
Description
A Nautolan female with normally bright red skin, her face, forearms, the palms of her hands, and the base of her head tails are a sugary white-she was apparently descended from a shallow water dwelling Nautolan, who sport much brighter colors than the ones in the deeper and colder seas. As with many Nautolans, her emotions can alter her skin color, usually intensifying the shade of red if she's excited or afraid, and dulling it when she's bored or at rest.
Her eyes are usually dark black and reflective, though if highly illuminated, they're shown to be a warm amber underneath.
Fashion wise, she's just as comfortable in a pair of free laborers duds as she is a flashy dress in an underworld dive-the blaster on her hip is a new addition, a parting gift from Vayga the Hutt. The tips of her hair/tentacles are usually set flying freely, as she hates binding them. She occasionally wears bells on them for some reason. Ren usually sports a razor tooth grin.
