Background
On the Copper Coast, a Srilurrian night wind is hardly a refreshing breeze. Near the equator, the sweltering gusts singe the flesh from faces of most off-worlders. Perched on an outcrop of the Boneless Canyon high above the dry remains of a river delta, the hot thermals buffet the leathery Weequay skin of agent To-Vod-Ri Kloo, spy and infiltrator of the Dnalvec Militia. Crouched on the rocky precipice, he fights an artificial surge of adrenaline that urges him to bolt forward, swan diving into the Houk encampment. “Silent still Father of night, protect me in your gaze” he offers to Quay, the moon-god of his people. To-Vod-Ri eyes the reflection of moonlight off the Houk commanding officer’s personal quarters below. His target, the war plans and communications held by Major Keedon Fass, would not easily obtained. Almost twice the size of even a large Weequay, the Houk colonizers were burly and ferocious in unarmed combat. Short tempered and cunning, Keedon Fass had single-handedly defeated a squad of six armed Weequay infantry. And Fass was known and feared for his fondness of dismemberment.
To-Vod-Ri tucks that thought away as he hurls his secured climbing cable over the edge and begins his descent in darkness. Although territorial battles between their species have dominated Sriluur for the past two hundred years, the Houk-Weequay Civil War that erupted five years ago has brought a new level of violence. The Houk aggression was unlike anything they’d seen before. Just recently, Meirm City defenses had been utterly crushed with reports of new weaponry never used before by the Houk. Although much of the leadership of Dnalvec Militia was doubtful, his squad leader, Lieutenant Commander Adazian Liebke, suspected the Houk were being assisted by off-worlders. To-Vod-Ri expects Fass’ communiques will be enlightening.
Touching down with barely a footprint, he bounds towards the Houk fortifications. The war has been costly to both sides, and the Houk patrol is thin. Just one lone guard at the open gate. Sidestepping along the natural rocky perimeter, To-Vod-Ri keeps to the shadows. A shrill series of beeping alerts the guard. Turning away from To-Vod-Ri, he reaches out to answer the call of gate coms. Posture relaxing, the unsuspecting Houk responds on the com with apparent familiarity. To-Vod-Ri overhears report of a wild Bandigo ambush and warning to be on the lookout for the indiginous sand dogs. The report devolves into chortling commentary about the gladiator battles of Anchor Blue in The Cauldron on Rattatak. The guard signs off as a thin metallic wire quickly ensnares his neck. Cat-like, To-Vod-Ri stair-steps up the guard’s legs and back, leveraging his weight against his wrist-worn garrotte that is tightening around the throat of the Houk. Knees between the shoulder blades, he arches back with all of his strength and weight, avoiding the flailing arms of his quarry. The briny sour of Houk urine fills his nostrils. The guard’s grasping hands now clutch desperately at his thick Houk neck, as his fingers dig into his own flesh to get purchase on the embedded wire. Another minute and then all is still.
To-Vod-Ri cleans his garrote before dragging the body into the shadows, careful not to detach the partially decapitated head. Another surge of adrenaline courses unexpectedly through him. Was that a natural burst? The thrill of the kill? He makes a mental note to have Adazian run diagnostics on his experimental adrenal implant. The trial run of this new cybernetic tech seems to have a few unexpected and untimely activations. Freshly graduated from his training at the Galactic Outdoor Survival School, Lt Commander Adazian Liebke was keen to employ new reconnoissance technologies to the battlefield here on Sriluur; The chrono garrote, night wolves, cybernetics…. To-Vod-Ri had volunteered for the adrenal boosters and was beginning to understand it's potential. He had been informed by Adazian that this mission was not only to gather important intel, but was also a test. Adazian enjoyed teasing with his secrets and obfuscations.
Moving deeper into the base, keeping to the shadows, he approaches the personal quarters of Keedon Fass. He eyes the electronic security interface, looking for wear patterns. Briefly he considers just bashing or pissing on it. He pulls out his climbing rope with grapple and launches it towards the rooftop. Hacking… not his style… or forté. On the rooftop he finds a ventilation shaft and quietly lowers himself into a maintenance room. Navigating around pumps and cooling equipment, he edges himself to a ground level vent cover. He is peering directly into Fass’ living quarters and surprisingly, it is unoccupied. From his belt he withdraws and activates a miniaturized fusion cutter and makes quick work of the grated cover. The dark of night is absent in this well-lit bed chamber. Lamps burn along the walls, armor rests haphazardly discarded in a corner, and a gruesome pair of bladed hand-hooks hang from the wall near the entrance.
Methodically, To-Vod-Ri searches the quarters. Prior intelligence provided that the data pad was kept here, but it was nowhere to be found. Desperately rifling through a display case of gruesome trophies- ears, heads, tusks, and other victims’ body parts, To-Vod-Ri almost missed the entrance of the Houk major. Standing in the doorway, carrying the data pad and a sizable flask of Mezerane Gold, Major Keedon Fass briefly freezes, assessing the situation and the relatively diminutive Weequay trapped in the corner. Tossing the data pad and flask aside, Fass lunges for the hanging hooks on the wall. To-Vod-Ri bursts into motion without hesitation, drawing a dart at his waist belt and simultaneously spinning for maximum torque, he launches a small dart directly at Fass.
The massive Houk yanks the hooked blades off the wall grinning menacingly as he adjusts his grip, dragging the metal edges against each other. He doesn’t notice the dart embedded in the side of his neck that contains Raquor’daan stinger venom. As the poison works quickly to his nervous system, the dark-wolf-derived neurotoxin seizes up his motor function. His legs and arms go limp and he collapses at To-Vod-Ri’s feet, wheezing coarsely. The dose will soon stop his respiratory function entirely. He’s as good as gone. Grabbing the discarded data pad and confirming its identity, To-Vod-Ri discovers the seal of the Galactic Empire. What would the Empire be doing out here on the edge of Hutt Space in the Outer Rim? Tucking the data pad into his pack, he quickly exits the vent he entered.
Back in Dnalvec, Lieutenant Commander Adazian Liebke has processed the information on the Imperial data pad. He shares with To-Vod-Ri that the Empire has been funding and supporting the war efforts of the Houk. However, the Houk are mere pawns in their larger plans. Coded data reveals the Empire’s plan to subjugate the entire planet and the initial schemes were already being made to set up a garrison in Meirm City. The bombing of the city had been the destructive work of the Empire, using the Houk colonists as cover. To-Vod-Ri expresses his disgust for the Imperial entanglements on Sriluur with his C.O., Adazian, then shares his intentions for the next phase. “Your mission confirms the Empires plans for Sriluur, Vod, and our people. Its evil grasp is expanding across the galaxy. I have decided to leave the Dnalvec Militia and join the Alliance to Restore the Republic”. He hands an old document to To-Vod-Ri. “This is was written by Mon Mothma, former senator of Chandrila, and leader of the Alliance”. In formal script, Vod reads:
“We, the Rebel Alliance, do therefore in the name -and by the authority- of the free beings of the Galaxy, solemnly publish and declare our intentions:
To fight and oppose you and your forces, by any and all means at our disposal;
To refuse any Imperial law contrary to the rights of free beings;
To bring about your destruction and the the destruction of the Galactic Empire;
To make forever free all beings in the galaxy.
To these ends we pledge our property, our honor, and our lives.”
“I want to join the efforts of these Rebels against the Empire. The destruction and havoc the Empire has sewn on Sriluur must be opposed head on,” agrees To-Vod-Ri.
“In three days, I am setting out to meet with some Rebels. I am forming a Special Forces group. I’m sure the Alliance will find a role for your special skills.” To-Vod-Ri nods in agreement.
Over the following days, he makes his preparations for departing Sriluur. He makes his offering at the Dnalvec Thali, the immense black stone in the city square. Gathering his meager supplies, armor and weapons, he looks up to the stars, imagining what missions would await him with the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
