Background
Mac recognizes the evil of the Empire and the suffering it brings. As a former mercenary, she worked alongside many who suffered Imperial atrocities, destructive policies, or had otherwise been victimized by the Empire. She's foregone lucrative contracts from the most wealthy in the Galaxy to pursue enlistment (and she doesn't let anyone forget about it), but for her, nothing beats being the front line tank with a heart of gold.

Mac has business interests directly tied to the Alliance, and she's around to make sure her interests are looked after.
