At the end of the Clone Wars, the newly formed Galactic Empire laid siege to Mandalore & many Mandalorian Clans were wiped out in the slaughter. Of the Thegas Clan, only one young Mandalorian, Daynella Thegas, survived & fled to the Outer Reaches, beyond the reach of the Empire. There, he worked as a Bounty Hunter, a common career among Mandalorians, and while tracking a bounty came upon a cargo ship filled with non-human war orphans that were going to be sold into slavery. Unwilling to turn a blind eye to this, especially when she learned the Empire didn't care to stop such enterprises, she eliminated the crew of the smuggler ship & scuttled it, making everyone believe that it had been lost with all hands (including their living cargo) so that those involved would not come looking for them. Since they where all orphans with no living family, Daynella decided to take them in as her own & founded a new Clan Thegas. To house them, she took a bounty to eliminate a fugitive pirate who had gotten his hands on a Lucrehulk-Class Battleship, an old Seperatist ship from the Clone Wars. She convinced the ones issueing the bounty to let her keep the ship instead of the credits on his head if she could pull it off solo. She succeeded, making sure their agreement & the proof of her success was irrefutable. Renaming it Almecs Bane, she relocated her Foundlings there & reprogrammed the Seperatist droids to not only help run the ship but raise the kids. Only she knows how many Battledroids are actually still functional & at her command, but, the possibilities are enough to make even the Empire hesitate in offensive action.
Raised to follow the Way of Mandalore, Jaryn's clan didn't have the financial resources to supply every member with their own Mandalorian armor, the majority of their communal earnings being used to maintain the ship. This led to a new custom within their clan; they would all be considered Initiates, rather than full Mandalorians, until they were able to earn their own armor. To this end, many of the Initiates would depart, striking out on their own, so that they could earn the credits they would need to acquire their armor & become fully recognized Mandalorians among the clan. If they returned to the clan with not only their armor, but, a ship of their own, they receive additional honor, but, it is not a requirement.
Following Daynella's example, as many Initiates did, he went into the Bounty Hunter field, specializing as a Gadgeteer. In order to get himself started, however, he needed credits & wound up borrowing money from the Hutt Syndicate to get some starting equipment.
