Background
Kerlas Roice
Aged 50
Homeworld Naboo
Kerlos was born in 49BBY in Theed, capital of the lush and prosperous world of Naboo.
An only child to his middle class merchant parents,he underwent a classical Naboo education while his father travelled the galaxy - the focus on arts, music culture was accompanied by robust mathematical, technical and debating syllabus.
Aged 17 at the blockade and Droid Army invasion of Naboo, his mother was gunned down in the street for breaking the enforced curfew. His father never returned from his business trip to Bespin, presumed vaporised by the Federation blockade. Roice was imprisoned in a work camp for the duration of the occupation. This was the beginning of his lifelong hatred of droids.
Realising he would have to fend for himself, he finished his education with support from the Royal Government and the resourcefulness learned during his his incarceration, he graduated with distinction in design and technical subjects. He secured an internship at the Nubian Design Collective and quickly rose up the ranks, becoming a well-established designer in the locally crowded luxury starship market throughout the Republic into the Empire’s reign.
By the time of the empire occupation he had become accustomed to the finer things in life - theatre, opera, the finest alien delicacies, the most sought-after Twi’leks and only the finest in deathsticks. Were it not for his enjoyment of hiking the vast green expanses of Naboo, he could easily have lived a life worthy of a Hutt.
While the Empire’s reign over Naboo was relatively lax in comparison to other subjugated worlds on account of it being the Emperor’s homeworld, there were major changes. There were plenty looking for high end starships from riches gained by exploitation of other worlds to supply the Empire’s hunger for materials, but as construction of the fleet grew, Royce was left with limited resources and finding his projects turning less lavish. Less chrome, more imperial grey. This proved to be a metaphor for the whole of Naboo society, and he deplored this desecration of the arts and culture he was born into.
Aged 45 and with business precarious and resources growing increasingly hard to come by (due to what turned out to be the construction of the death star) he got into a heated argument with an imperial navy lieutenant in a bar, after his comments about the decreasing quality of Naboo craftsmanship.
Once punch changed his life and ended that of the Lieutenant. Evading the empire-loyal security forces and a modest bounty, he escaped on a gungan freighter to Mon Calamari where he stumbled across some rebellion sympathisers in a cantina.
Seeing a way of avoiding his bounty, he joined their ranks and travelled far and wide as an engineer. He specialised in modifying civilian ships to become more militarily useful - whilst a world away from the luxury cruisers he was used to, he found he could turn his hand to fixing most things when the pressure was on. Except droids…
He travelled far and wide in his engineering role, and whilst he had a few brushes with lone TIE fighters and fought off his share of boarding parties, he had no real battle experience. His classical Naboo education and his previous life in high society allowed him to function well within more prosperous circles, but he now longed for a life of luxury that a man in the rebellion and who also had a price on his head cannot realistically aspire to. He set out to play his part in dismantling the Empire to allow his former homeworld to be returned to its former glory, as well as outlast the price on his head.
