Background
Ancient droid created too many years and many memory-wipes ago to remember. Not unique, but most of his generation have been lost/destroyed. He knows that he was originally designed to be a house droid, a multi-tasking butler/servant/utility droid for an ancient race long forgotten.
His original owner appears to be a noble of some sort in a mid-rim world about a 1000 years ago. He was a bit of a tinkerer and neglected to do memory wipes and did a series of modifications to his processor and chassis. It was soon after adding a more complex central core that Butler became sentient. This process of replacing most of his previous programming and frame wen on over the next 200 years of his original owners life.
His memory of follow on events is only partial, bits of data slurred together in the recesses of his memory core. At some point he was a ship mechanic, he spent a century or two powered down in storage, was a librarian on a core rim planet, and many times was used in uprisings and battles.
During the clone wars he became the personal aid to a Jedi Artisan to continued to modify and explore his memory. His last event was in setting up a remote safe-house in the Mid-Rim, but the Jedi never returned. Later he found that his master was killed during Order 66, and the Republic has become the Empire.
Motivation
Cause: As he has spent the last 100+ years in the service of the Rebublic, speicfically at the hands of his ower a Jedi Artisan, this is his first loyalty. However he is an ancient droid, with layers of interests and long term goals.
Primary goals: Following the wishes and commands of his owner, as best he is able, in the capacity he was designed. While most times these wishes have typically be straightforward and clear, there have been times when N97 has had to determine the most likely primary goal when the goals are ambiguous.
Secondary goals are:
The creation/repair and modification of tools, droids and equipment for achieving his primary goals.
A clean and orderly environment, one that is efficient for achieving the above goals.

Description
Short 5’2” and stocky, very ancient humanoid droid.
His body is some-what cylindrical, with a flat topped head, 2 eye-like forward sensors, and with a high-res display across his upper chest/neck and upper back/neck. His face is a complex combination of high quality displays and sensors, mounted on a neck that can rotate 360 degrees. Additional his arms, legs and waist can rotate completely, and can collapse inward somewhat, allowing him to rest squat. This causes some to call him “The Can” due to this shape that is similar to a trash can. Coming across as a bulky, slow and somewhat clumsy, he appears to be a benign appearing droid.
Generally a low-talker, he mainly uses a high density display readouts to communicate, or the built in communications devices. Due to his long history, he has kept an off-line record of his history so that after a memory wipe he can review his history and not lose who he is. Also due to his ancient nature, his base programing is complex and sentient, so a memory wipe does not reset him very much. His usual mannerisms include a helpful attitude, acts the part of a droid devoted to his owner. He is nearly always active, either in serving, and helping the organics around him, or in evaluating, repairing and updating mechanical and technical systems. He is not very talkative but is always busy.
His colors appeared to have been dusky dark red, but after many physical changes, cleaning and careful repairs is now a faded dark gray-red. He has no weapons visible, but has thick forearms and legs, and numerous textured nodules, latches and electrical contact ports over his body. Most visible on his upper left chest is an old droid restraining bolt port.
