wrong place, wrong time.
Shortly after his deployment to his new post, Jan's outpost was attacked by rebel freedom fighters, taking him and a few others as prisoner, he was given the choice to either spend life in prison, or fight against the Empire, had it not been for fates hand, he might've ended up dead.

Cause, Jan wishes to repay the debt of the sparing of his life, he is now indebted to the rebellion

Jan was an imperial stortrooper until one day a rebel cell attacked his post, taking him and a few others hostage, he was given the option to join the rebellion, or serve life imprisonment, you can guess which he chose.
Due to the Empire's indoctrination procedures, Jan believes that Rebels are anarchists, and will do anything to disrupt peace and structure, displaying that none of this true, he is indebted to the rebellion, swearing life and limb for the cause.
