Background

Taal grew up orphaned in the urban warren of Nar Shaddaa, one of countless forgotten children who ran in packs and served as lookouts or pickpockets or messengers for the adult gangs. Eventually he graduated to be a pilot working for a minor Hutt gangster, getting various cargos in and out of systems as well as occasionally serving as an enforcer of the Hutt's word. As happens to bosses who aren't at the top tiers, eventually the organization was taken over and forcibly absorbed into a larger one, with many members of the smaller crew finding themselves abruptly jobless or deceased.

Fortunately, Taal managed to survive the purge and even became one of his new boss' best and most trusted pilots due to his ability to outrun, outmaneuver, or out-bullshit the Imperial forces and get his cargo to wherever it needed to be. For him, that's the most important thing-- he loves the thrill of piloting, and the adrenaline rush that comes with sneaking past Imperial noses and then tweaking them on the way out, but successfully getting the X to the Y is the thing that really gives him satisfaction. The few times he's failed-- or even felt like he hasn't done a good job, despite technically having completed the objective-- he's gone into an alcoholic funk that has occasionally lasted for weeks.

Someone in the 229th's administrative level thought that given the group's particular mission profile, a smuggler's skills might come in handy. So they called up Kreska the Hutt, and more or less said, "Remember that favor you owe? It's time to pay up." Taal, who by that point was in another funk and had managed to get on Kreska's bad side after a string of bad jobs, was tapped for the assignment. If he did well, it'd look good for the Hutt. If he managed to get himself killed or captured, well, at least it wouldn't be Kreska's cargo he was caught with.
