Background
Bidda Fed was born a free being on Nar Shaddaa. His parents and their entire clan had left Chad with a promise of work in a huge shipyard in orbit around the Smuggler’s Moon. When the shipyard fell on hard times the entire clan was sent down to the planet and to fend for itself. The members of the small clan scattered, each finding work where he or she could find it.
Bidda ended up working as a mechanic in a garage specializing in podracers and spederbikes owned by the notorious gangster Jergel the Hutt. He worked there for a few years with only relatively minor incidents involving him doing something to a speeder or a pod that felt like a really good idea at the time but turned out to be an utter disaster once the vehicle was out of the shop.
In one of his attempts to get more out of one of the speeder bikes, he tried installing batteries from discarded podracers to boost the power output of the engines during acceleration. To really count he needed a bigger power cell than he could find, so he tried to super-charge the cell he had installed. As he tweaked the connection the power cell exploded. The bike was ruined and Bidda’s left hand and lower arm was in tatters after the explosion.
After recovering slightly, Bidda begged Jergel for a small loan to get him a new arm. In the end, Jergel decided to pay for a very basic replacement for the mechanic, appreciating the often unusual ideas the little fellow had for modifying podracers.
Only a few months later, the first of Jergel’s thugs came round to collect payments for the arm. And Bidda was flat broke, having just spent the rest of his limited paycheck on a brand new scanner that could differentiate between the cuisine of over a thousand cultures just by scanning a ready meal. It might seem slightly superfluous, since most of the food vendors on Nar Shadda will simply tell the buyer what type of food they sell, but to Bidda the scanner was an incredible game-changer in his relationship with new and exciting food.
The thugs only roughed Bidda up a little, and told him that if he didn’t have the cash next time, they’d repossess his arm. And possibly a few organs to pay for Jergel’s inconvenience. Despite having two hearts, like all Chadra-Fan, Bidda thought this was an awful deal, and decided not to be there the next time the thugs came to call. Or the time after that.
Since he had no credits, and the vendor that sold him the food-scanner didn’t want to refund the damn thing, Bidda snuck onto a large freighter headed away from Nar Shaddaa. He managed to stay hidden for three weeks in hyperspace. The chief engineer suspected there was a stowaway on board, but since the ship seemed to run better than ever he kept this to himself.
As Bidda was settling into the nice rhythm of hiding, repairing stuff that sometimes even needed to be repaired, and stealing copious amount of food from the galley, disaster struck. The freighter was attacked by pirates. As they rounded up the crew, they found Bidda’s hiding place and dragged him onto their ship with the others. Bidda, like the rest of the crew, had to make a choice. Pay ransom, work for the pirates or get spaced. Most of the crew was ransomed but Bidda and a few others became pirates.
Life as a pirate wasn’t too bad, as far as Bidda was concerned. He got to work on the ship, as well as the weapons and gear of the pirate crew. Many of them loved him for the improvements he could do on their favorite blasters, and those tended to defend him when the occasional unhappy pirate wanted to space him after their favorite weapon malfunctioned at a critical moment.
Bidda found working on the weapons and gear much more rewarding than repairing the ship and fighters of the pirate crew, and focused on becoming good enough at that to be able to avoid other duties on board. In the end, he came to despise the pirate crew and their cruel ways after the captain was killed and the new captain decided to stop offering prisoners to pay a ransom, instead selling them into slavery.
When the ship docked at the Wheel for repairs after a skirmish with planetary defense forces, Bidda used the opportunity and snuck off the ship. When the pirates discovered he was missing, he had to get off the station quickly, and decided to sneak on board a small freighter that was scheduled to depart soon. When the crew wasn’t looking, he snuck on board and hid in the cargo bay, which turned out to be full of crates of food. Which suited the hungry Chadra-Fan down to the ground.
The ship took on two passengers, strange humans that talked excitedly about some Order and mentioned someone called Luke Skywalker almost in reverence. One of the humans surprised Bidda when he actually found the hiding Chadra-Fan behind a seemingly closed panel, even when Bidda was very sure he hadn’t made a sound. And yet the Human told him he had simply felt his presence there through the Force.
After spending a solid hour being yelled at and threatened by the smuggler who owned the ship, the two passengers calmly offered to pay the fare for the stowaway to Yavin IV. The told Bidda that there was surely work for a mechanic at the moon.
When the freighter landed on Yavin IV, Bidda was happy to see the jungle, and the distinct lack of large bodies of water on the moon. He was even happier when he met Luke Skywalker, who had come to greet two of his students back from a trip. They introduced Bidda to Master Skywalker. Luke smiled and told him there would be a place for him here for sure, and invited him to dine with him and his students this evening. He then said something about the will of the Force leading Bidda to Yavin IV, but Bidda wasn’t paying attention.
Luke had immediately sensed that the Chadra-Fan was Force Sensitive, even if the little fellow had no idea. He offered Bidda a chance to discover his true potential, taking his place with the other students and learning about the Force. This seemed like a horrible idea to Bidda, who had not planned to join any cult, but in the end, curiosity won out and he accepted the offer. There was free food and plenty of it, and that whole Force-thing sounded very interesting.
During months of study, Bidda found out that he did indeed possess a connection to this strange Force. His senses, already far greater than most species possessed, were augmented by his use of the Force. He did learn to lift stones and do other things with the Force, but his limited patience prevented him from making any great leaps in that field of study.
To his own surprise, and to the surprise of Luke himself, Bidda turned out to have a rare ability that allowed him to use the Force to mend wounds and heal illnesses. The ability was limited, and even after trying to detach his cyber-arm, Bidda couldn’t regrow his arm, much to his disappointment.
When Luke told him he was ready to seek out his own crystal and build a lightsaber of his own, Bidda was as happy as any techno-mad Chadra-Fan could be. He found a crystal on the frigid world Luke sent him and several other students to, experiencing the Force in ways that he hadn’t before as he was tested by the Force. When he returned, he started working on the hilt for his lightsaber, taking immense pleasure in creating a weapon of his own, rather than tinkering with something other people had designed.
His time training with the lightsaber was the most exciting thing Bidda had ever tried. At first, he found that his size hampered him, and that his limited strength kept him back. But Luke showed him how to use a different style, using his wits rather his brawn, defending rather than attacking. At first, Bidda didn’t get it, how was it possible to win a fight by defending? Surely, he had to strike fast and hard to win a fight? But then he discovered that simply by outlasting his opponent, waiting for an opening and exploiting the mistakes his opponent made could he win even the stronger students.
After building his own lightsaber and learning how to use it, Luke told him he was ready for the next step in his training. He would go out into the Galaxy with other students, working to make the Galaxy better and build the reputation of the Jedi. Bidda thought this was both a terrifying prospect, and an opportunity to see more of the Galaxy. He gathered up his meager belongings and got ready to leave Yavin IV.
Motivation
Ambition: Discovery
Bidda loves experiencing new things and discovering something he didn't know before. Although he wants the Jedi Order that Luke Skywalker is trying to rebuild to survive and thrive, he is still (selfishly) focused on his own experiences. Although he would never admit this to his fellow Jedi. Least of all to Skywalker himself. A part of this is Bidda's fascination with mechanical things, creating and altering various devices that in the end will probably have a vastly different operating parameters than the designers ever intended.
Morality
Morality: 50
Emotional Strength: Curiosity
Bidda has almost never met anybody who wasn't interesting, and hardly ever pushed a button that didn't do something fascinating. He is not afraid to try new things, meet new people and see new worlds. Life is one grand adventure to him, making slight discomforts that might come with new experiences trivial in comparison. The only slight exception has to do with large bodies of water, which Bidda tends to find really good excuses not to visit.
Emotional Weakness: Obsession
Sometimes Bidda goes a little too far. Sometimes he really has to talk to that strange guy with the massive scattergun and bad disposition. Sometimes he can't stand not pushing that big red button marked 'do not push'. Sometimes that dark cave on this unexplored planet is just too exciting not to go into the deepest, darkest corner. And sometimes, even going near water (or, *shudder* an ocean) is just exciting enough that he'll just have to do it.
Obligation (5): Criminal
Bidda worked for a pirate crew for a brief while several months ago, after a freighter he was a stowaway on was taken by pirates. He was given a choice between paying a ransom, taking a long walk out a short airlock, or joining the pirates. So he joined the pirates. As a result, he is a wanted being on several Mid-Rim planets as well as several of the richest planets in the Colonies.
Obligation (5): Debt
Bidda was working for Jergel the Hutt, a nasty crime boss on Nar Shadda when he lost his left arm in an accident. He was fiddling with a powerpack trying to get more power into it than it was designed to hold, when it blew up in his paw. Jergel agreed to have his arm replaced by a cybernetic arm, but told Bidda he owed him. It is a debt that Bidda has been avoiding for years, mostly because he doesn't have the credits. And he doesn't have the credits since he tends to spend every credit he earns on new gadgets or toys. And he's almost positive that the massive Hutt will not understand that this is a perfectly valid reason not to pay him back.
Description
Bidda Fed is tall, for a Chadra-Fan, at over 105 centimeters in height. He is covered in grey fur with large, black eyes and huge ears. Any scars or noticeable features he might have are hidden behind his thick, short fur. The only exception is his metallic-black, uncovered cyberarm that replaces his left arm.
He tends to wear mechanic’s overall and a vest, both overflowing with tools and gadgets. He carries a pistol under his left arm, hidden under his vest, and a small lightsaber hanging on his belt or hidden in one of his many pockets, depending on if he wants to advertise his training as a Jedi or not.
