Background
Master Verl Jett lives life one quarter parsec at a time. He's spent most of his time as a Jedi behind the controls of a starfighter — so much so that he's more comfortable there than any other place in the galaxy.
Verl is a particularly adroit starfighter ace, recognized within the Jedi Order for his nimble flying. To be assigned to command his first Vector squadron, Verl was promoted to Master at a young age. He was the obvious choice to lead the squadron, the most skillful of the candidates, and so readily accepted the role. But he always harbored the feeling that while his promotion was appropriate for him as a pilot, it came before he was truly ready to be a Jedi Master.
Nonetheless, his squadron — operating out of Derra in the Outer Rim — was a bright spot in an otherwise lawless frontier.
This came to an end during the Battle of Baroli, when he nearly died in a starfighter crash. He has endured an arduous recovery since, taking him away from his squadron for a lengthy period during which he couldn't fly. Away from the pilot's seat, his meditations finally caused him to confront his feelings about his premature promotion, beginning the journey that he must take to reconnect to the non-piloting aspects of his calling as a Jedi.
Recently, Master Pra-Tre Veter of the High Council approached Master Verl and assigned him to join the growing Jedi presence at Outset Station alongside Northern Frontier Security & Catering. Verl was surprised by the assignment — he had expected to be returned to command of his starfighter squadron on Derra, in the Outer Rim.
THE BATTLE OF BAROLI
Despite being an ace pilot, Master Verl nearly got himself killed during the Battle of Baroli. A refugee convoy of ZeHethbra fleeing a conflict on their homeworld was attacked by a rival clan while refueling in orbit above the planet Baroli. Verl's squadron — with him in command, was dispatched to rescue the convoy. A dogfight ensued.
During the engagement, a recent addition to the squadron — the newly promoted Chagrian Knight Sostara Kerrim, who replaced a veteran pilot — was targeted by a stream of cannon fire. Not fully trusting such a young, new member to avoid the vicious blast, Verl positioned his Vector in-between the enemy and Sostara's own. But in that moment, Sostara had it covered; she deftly maneuvered herself to safety, and Verl's ship was disabled for naught before crashing onto the planet surface far below.
He barely survived his reckless action and, once mostly recovered, was chastised for not having faith in his wing mate, or the Force for that matter.
Motivation
Master Verl doesn't feel like a Jedi, not really. Having spent most of his time in a cockpit, he feels very distanced from the traditional Jedi experience of righting wrongs and helping others. He mostly keeps these feelings to himself, but they have been a heavy burden as of late.
OBLIGATION: 10
FAMILY: The character has deep ties with his family ("I don't have friends and squad mates, I have family!") that require a great deal of time and attention. Despite no longer being assigned to his former command, Varl would do anything for his adopted brothers- and sisters-in-arms.
Morality
MORALITY: 73
EMOTIONAL STRENGTH
COMPASSION: The character cares about the tribulations others face, and wants to help those he comes across. His compassion may lead Verl to jump in without a thought to his own safety in order to aid those who need it.
EMOTIONAL WEAKNESS
RECKLESSNESS: Of course, a little thought can go a long way towards saving someone from a major mistake, which Verl may find out to his sorrow on more than one occasion. Reckless behavior can leave him in dangerous situations or at the mercy of more calculating individuals.
Description
Master Verl is tall and bulky for a Sullustan, filling out his stature of 1.7 meters with wide, muscular shoulders and a barrel chest. Through a disciplined exercise routine, he maintains an impressive physique for a being entering middle age — though a noticeable bit of paunch has started sticking around his waist.
His athleticism isn't quite what it used to be, however. Verl has only recently recovered from a starship wreck that would have killed most. To the most perceptive, he has a slight hitch in his step. Those who knew him a decade ago might be surprised to watch him wince when performing physical feats that he once did with practiced ease.
His mousy, black eyes seem steadfast, almost obstinate. But any intimidation in his demeanor is betrayed by his short size in comparison to most humanoids.
