Originally used to power a Corporate Sector Spaceport, GNK-22 was liberated by the Droid Gotra when they seized control of it, freeing all local droids from biologicals. After being allowed to develop without memory wipes, GNK-22 joined with the Gotra and received hardware enhancements from their independent contractor.

Before long as the Empire started to crack down on the Gotra, GNK-22 threw his lot in with the Rebellion, as while the Rebels may mostly care for biological lifeforms, they have a much stronger Droid Rights platform than the Empire.

Like most droids liberated by the Gotra, GNK-22 aims for Droid equality, at any means necessary. The Empire's rampart discrimination against droids makes them the most obvious target for these means.
