Background
There is no Emotion, There is Peace
There is no Ignorance, There is Knowledge
There is no Passion, There is Serenity
There is no Chaos, There is Harmony
There is no Death, There is the Force
These words guided the thoughts and actions of Xeran Vandrak for nearly all of his life. He had been inducted into the Jedi Order at the age of three and brought to the Dantooine Enclave to undergo his training. He spent the first ten years of his life learning the ways of the Jedi through books and classes with other younglings. He trained with the lightsaber, learned to harness the power of the force and overcame his fear of the galaxy. After completing his initiate trials with ease, he was granted the rank of Padawan at the age of thirteen and placed under the tutelage of Master Vrook Lamar.
Master Vrook instilled a great sense of duty and discipline in the boy, often chastising him for breaking even the smallest of rules. At one point during his apprenticeship to Vrook: Xeran had engaged in a heated debate with a fellow Padawan and it had ended with both in a shouting match. Once his master discovered this violation of the first line of the Jedi Code, Carrigan was made to scrub the entire enclave spaceport by himself. The training he underwent was even more intense, with Vrook insisting that learning the ways of the lightsaber would benefit his Padawan greater than learning the upper echelons of utilizing his abilities in the Force. Of course Xeran was strong in the force, but he channeled his power within versus without. His reflexes, heightened by his channeling of the force through his body, were faster than a Nexu hunter. He was an expert in reflecting and parrying blows to the point where very few could overcome his defenses.
His skills would be of great use when he disobeyed direct orders from the enclave’s council and joined Revan in aiding the Republic against the Mandalorian threat. He was only 21 at the time, but his skills and abilities earned him the rank of commander and his power grew as the war dragged on. Involved in countless ground skirmishes and several small-scale battles, Xeran developed into a fearsome warrior and inspiring leader. He led the charge against one of many Mandalorian outposts on Vanquo, securing one of the first victories for the combined forces of the Jedi and Republic. It was the first time he had killed and it had not rattled him as much as it should have. After devoting his life to peace, he took a life and felt little to no remorse...
Having killed half a dozen veteran mandalorian neo-crusaders in his first real battle and leading his men to victory in the same day, Xeran earned a reputation as a skilled warrior and commander. Over the next several years, he would earn many more titles and victories while in service to the Republic. Four years after joining the war effort alongside Revan and his other followers, the Mandalorian Wars culminated in the battle of Malachor V. The now 25 year old Jedi Knight barely escaped the devastating effects of the Mass Shadow Generator. Having managed to recover a crashed fighter that was still operational, Carrigan fled the planet just moments before General Meetra Surik activated the catastrophic weapon.
Through the echoes of the force, he felt the lives of thousands wink out of existence. For the first time since the start of the war, the Jedi Knight felt a crippling sense of fear and regret. The man he had come to idolize had turned his weapon on the very people who had devoted themselves to his cause. Xeran didn’t just feel betrayed, he felt angry. After making it back to the Hammerhead corvette under his command, he ordered the ship to fall back to Coruscant. The battle of Malachor had awoken the feelings of guilt that Xeran had hidden all these years and it was past time that he was disciplined for his actions. He felt guilt over the fact that he had not only forgotten what it meant to be a Jedi, but had also taken countless lives during the course of the war that had not needed to be extinguished.
His old master was severely dissapointed, claiming that had he simply focused his power on following the Jedi Way, he would likely have become one of the youngest Jedi Masters in history. The Council of Coruscant exiled him from the Order, ordering him to surrender his lightsaber. Seeing this inevitable outcome coming, he had informed the council that he left it in his quarters on the Hammerhead vessel he still commanded. The Council ordered him to recover the saber and return it to them, but Xeran had other plans. He had built that saber himself, recovered the crystal from the caves of Dantooine himself and earned the weapon after countless years of study and trials. He returned to the ship and reclaimed his saber, but instead of returning to the Council he boarded a freighter bound for the Mid Rim.
He has spent the last year living in exile, separated from the Republic and the Jedi. He’s focused on healing the mental wounds caused by the war, but never let his skills with a lightsaber slip out of practice. Now, with the Jedi Civil War beginning, he heads to Korriban to join the war effort under the guise of a Sith Acolyte named Carrigan Vost. This path is his best chance to claim the life of his former idol.
Motivation
He seeks to reclaim vengeance on Revan for his actions on Malachor V and rid the galaxy of him.
