Background
I was born on Tayana Station a mining facility somewhere in the Duro system. My mother died in childbirth leaving only my father to raise me. My father was a mining engineer specialising in explosives on the station. The company the ran the mines treated us all like cattle drives us to work backbreaking shifts for next to no pay. Despite this I remember my father always used to say "All will be for the best, in the best of all possible worlds."
He was a good man, caring and clever, but poor. We could barely afford to eat on the meagre wages he was paid for the long hours he worked, but my father ensured I never went hungry. Even if he did. As early as I could talk I wanted to help him but he would not allow it "All will be for the best, in the best of all possible worlds."
But he could not stop it for long. On my fifth birthday, a day that should be enjoyed, I worked my first shift in the mines, climbing to cramped and hard to reach spots to place mining charges. My body still bares the scars of when a charge would go off prematurely or when I cut myself on a rock. Each time my father would patch me up and repeat "All will be for the best in the best of all possible worlds"
Despite where we were there were no other Duros on the station. I had only ever seen one other Duros, Aldim the shuttle pilot. His shuttle transported the ore out and supplies in. He was a friend of my father and helped when he could. While my father tutored me in explosives Aldim showed me how to pilot a ship and operate a Navicomputer. One day Aldim took the ore out but never returned, we'd heard he had been arrested but we didn't know why. When my father found out he simply said "All will be for the best in the best of all possible worlds."
My father had always taught me to trust The Republic, they were there to protect us and if they knew what it was like here they would put a stop to it. Eventually my father and some of the other miners formed a trade union to make contact with The Republic and ask for help. I had a bad feeling about it and begged him not to go along to their first meeting but my father simply said " All will be for the best in the best of all possible worlds."
The meeting was broken up by some mercenaries hired by the mining company. My father was among the dead. The Republic formed a committee to investigate the massacre, they found that the violence was started by the miners themselves and the mercenaries defended themselves. No one spent a day in prison for the death of my father. The Republic that my father trusted so much did nothing. And all I could think of was my father saying "All wil be for the best in the best of all possible worlds."
Shortly afterward Aldim contacted me. He was out of prison and heard about my father. He offered me a chance to escape Tayana Station and visit justice upon my father's killers. I accepted and we both escaped the station, leaving behind a mining explosive on the station's main reactor as a parting gift. Afterward all that remained of Tayana Station was dust, thirty-two people died in the blast. I did not care though, for the first time in my life it finally felt as though all was for the best in the best of all possible worlds.
