Background
For as long as she can remember, Riley has lived among the stars. Her adopted family, the crew of the freighter Prowling Vengeance, had once confessed that she might even have been born off-world, though the accuracy of this suggestion has never been confirmed.
What is known is that, as a newborn, Riley was abandoned aboard the Prowling Vengeance by an unidentified mother, who either stowed her infant inside once it had made landfall or left it behind after her passage between worlds. Regardless, there was some debate among the crew about what to do with the human babe, ranging from abandoning it at the nearest outpost to leaving it aboard another ship. In the end, and at some length, it was decided that the child could remain, provided its upkeep wasn't too taxing.
As she grew older, Riley - named after the freighter captain's uncle - became exposed to the crew's sympathetic attitude towards the various rebel cells emerging throughout the galaxy. Every one of them believed that uprisings and revolt were the only way to save the galaxy, and as the years passed that belief became unwavering; the emergence of the fledgling Rebel Alliance, first under Fulcrum and then under Mon Mothma, only strengthened their zealous views, resulting in their own increased involvement in "treasonous" activity within Imperial space.
By the time Riley had entered her teenage years, she had already been made to assist in numerous missions that, according to the Vengeance's crew, might "further the cause of those who oppose the Empire". In all such instances, she was exposed to considerable risk, and often put into situations beyond the scope of her abilities. She would always survive - either through luck, tenacity, or the timely intervention of her fellow crewmates or Rebel sympathisers - but no matter how close she came to death, she would always be made to do it all over again in the future. On the few occasions when she betrayed her fear of death, the crew's captain would tell her, calmly, that she needed to be brave: her death, in the grand scheme of things, did not matter, not if the Empire became weaker in any way from her sacrifice.
At sixteen years old, Riley's skills as a pilot had become clear, as had her increased streak of favourable luck. She was given access to an old snub fighter by her captain, who used her capabilities as a pilot to help the freighter enter, or flee, mission sites. She would stand against overwhelming odds at the orders of her crew, and escape time and again through inexplicably good fortune; and when her starfighter had been repaired, or her body healed, she would do it all over again.
Scarif changed everything: when news of the Alliance's assault on the planet reached the crew of the Prowling Vengeance, they sought out the Rebellion in the hopes of joining their war efforts formally. It didn't take them long, having gathered numerous Rebel contacts as a result of their prior missions, and their reputation as enemies of the Empire enabled them to ingratiate themselves with Alliance Command quickly.
The need for good pilots had never been greater, and so when their superior officers began looking, the crew of the Vengeance immediately passed Riley over for their use. Although eager to help, the seventeen year old felt the sting of their abandonment keenly; that they left without more than a passing farewell only made her feel worse. Nevertheless, she took up her flight suit, climbed into her X-Wing, and did as she was told - for the safety and security of the Rebel Alliance.
Now eighteen years old, Riley has established herself as a starfighter pilot of note, and involved herself in numerous key missions for her superiors aboard the CR-90 corvette, Ember, including the scouting of locations for new Rebel bases and the engagement of Imperial forces whilst on deep patrol.
Motivation
BELIEFS: Honour
Despite the extreme and strict indoctrination that she received throughout her youth and young adolescence, Riley maintains for herself a code of ethics that help to guide her in situations where her own life isn't the one at risk. She cares deeply for others, and will do anything she can to prevent the loss of innocent lives.
Morality
MORALITY: 50
- Conflict: 0
EMOTIONAL STRENGTH: Bravery
Due to her upbringing and indoctrination, as well as her inherent compassion, Riley has grown to be remarkably brave in the face of overwhelming odds. Such courage often leads her into extremely risky situations, however, and there may come a time when neither her skill nor her fortuitous luck can save her.
EMOTIONAL WEAKNESS: Anger
Whilst her enforced loyalty to the Rebellion and hatred for the Empire makes her into a formidable soldier, it has also robbed Riley of a considerable degree of free will throughout most of her life. She masks it well, but her adopted family's abandonment has only helped to add fuel to a fire that has been slowly building for years. And when it's finally released, there's no telling who will be hurt.
Description
Reaching around 5'7" in height and possessing a lean, athletic figure, Riley's a pretty young woman who disguises her allure behind a curtain of long, untamed black hair and an assortment of weathered and dirtied flight suits. Upon closer inspection, her grey-blue eyes are easy to spot, as is the sharp intellect that thrives behind them; her smile, which is worn often but fleetingly, has an infectious quality about it. She speaks with no discernable accent.
When moving about, Riley betrays a sense of purpose and urgency, as though she is ever-conscious of some secret timetable that she must forever keep to. Despite her energy, there is a degree of grace in everything she does, from entering a room to taking a seat, from drawing an item from her utility belt to disembarking from the cockpit of her X-Wing. When speaking, her words are always clear and deliberate, with each sounding as though it has been carefully appraised before being uttered.
More often than not, Riley can be seen wearing her flight suit, save for those occasions when a uniform or civilian ensemble would be more suitable. In those latter instances, Riley defaults to practical, if simple, clothing that allows for complete freedom of movement without drawing the eye.
