Background
First use of force: While at a casino on Zeltros, Zena was able to read the emotions of off-worlders to help her win hand at sabacc. The Jedi were present for another matter and noticed a presence, Zena, at the table influencing the emotions of those around her to have a good time and relax. Since they noticed her use the force, they took her to be trained.
Zena was assigned to Master Kulta Huono, a Phydolon Protector/Investigator. Kulta cared little about decorum and was drunk whenever she didn't have to appear in front of the council. Zena learned through her Master that alcohol made her feel better and, through constant exposure, she found relaxed inhibitions helped her connect with the force and act naturally instead of overthinking things. This lead to her conviction that she should always be inebriated, at least a little, to become the best leader and make the right decisions.
Kulta was sent on assignment to Hartaris. She will tell you it's because the sexist Jedi council 'hates' women. In actuality, the Jedi sent her to an undesirable position because she's a drunk and unreliable. Zena resented Kulta for making excuses instead of facing her problems; she believes her master's character flaw is not the fact that she drinks but rather the fact that she doesn't advocate for her own happiness.
Zena resolves to become a strong leader, unlike her master. While Kulta could handle herself fine in one-on-one situations, such as training Zena, her confidence crumbled in front of an audience. Zena learned that through negotiation, she could elevate herself to positions of authority over others, dispelling the notion that Jedi were against women. She does not use this authority to command others, but rather maintains a general positivity among a squad.
