Background

Dharm is a Rodian who was raised in poverty by his father Deeraro in a farming town called Kylag under Chekkoo Clan allegiance located on Rodia's continent of Betu. Dharm's mother Vre had abandoned him and his father shortly after giving birth to him in 18BBY. Dharm never formally met his mother and knew very little about her with the exception of a few stories that were shared with him by his father while growing up which painted a picture of her determination, kindness, and resolve despite her abandonment. Dharm's father was a trade farmer who would grow food crop for the citizens of the local domed city Trallik as well as rare export crops which he would sell to the export cooperative unit of Trallik to be sold to the Savareen Sector Trade Unit, a remnant branch of the Intergalactic Trade Federation. Deeraro was known across Betu for his farms defenses which were flawless at preventing theft of his rare export crops which made up the majority of his income. The technologically armored defenses were expertly and elaborately crafted of scrap computer parts from the Trallik waste sector as well as old Rodian military war machines which he collected over the years. Dharm has many memories of sitting down with his father by the nearby river and listening to him talk about eventually saving enough from his business to buy a ship and flee Rodia together to explore the outer rim in search of a better life.

In the years leading up to the Battle of Yavin, tensions began to boil between rival clans Chekkoo and Chattza over trade routes in Betu. Several battles broke out between the rival clans which ended in the destruction of various trade outposts and farms throughout Betu severely damaging Rodia's economic trade output. As the battles came to a head in 1BBY, members of the Chattza clan launched an offensive against Deeraro and Dharm's notoriously defended rare export farmland. Though many attacks had been survived over the years, this attack succeeded. In an attempt to send a message to any other Chekkoo clan members who would oppose them, members of the Chattza clan murdered Deeraro before his son could stop them. Enraged and never having killed before, Dharm executed the remaining clan members before they could take his life too. He searched his father's room for anything of value before he fled; amongst the scrap and junk, he discovered a small wooden chest with his initials inscribed on it. He took the chest, all of the money he could find, and a couple days' worth of rations and hid in a nearby town. While walking through the streets, he overheard some locals discussing the tragedy that took place at the farm as well as recent news from the capital domed city of Rodia: Navik the Red, Grand Protector of Rodia, called an end to the trade route clan wars by outlawing independent crop production in favor of Empire-controlled crop production.

Days later, when he had found safety in the slums of a faraway dome city, Dharm opened the chest he took from his father's room. Inside, was a smooth, radiating ivory-colored stone not much larger than his hand which he felt an indescribable connection to, and a letter from Deeraro that revealed the following: Vre, Dharm's mother, was a Jedi who fought in the Clone Wars. On the heels of the war and the enactment of Order 66, she fled to Rodia to disappear from sight. She ended up meeting and falling in love with Deeraro and gave birth to Dharm on Rodia shortly after. However, shortly after giving birth, she suddenly vanished with no explanation. In the letter, Deeraro expressed his love for Vre, and his deep belief that somehow she left to protect them and would return someday.

Inspired by the truth revealed to him about his mother, and angered by the unjust death of his father, Dharm searched far and wide on Rodia in an attempt to find an opportunity to flee the planet and set off in exploration to find his mother but struggled due to the planets strict policy on emigration. Weeks later, Dharm had run out of credits and resources and sank to crime to survive. He routinely hacked Trallik's vendor units for spare credits which he would need to escape Rodia. One day while hacking a vendor unit, he was approached by a human man who introduced himself as Jesper who complimented Dharm on his technological skills. He then offered Dharm a one-way ticket to Tatooine by means of a re-purposed vcx-100 light freighter ship in exchange for 2 years of service as a droid technician for Teemo the Hutt whom Jesper worked for. In a last ditch effort to escape Rodia and search for his mother, Dharm signed the contract and left Rodia with Jesper. During those 2 years, he learned about the galaxy, how to protect himself, how to slice terminal units, and even how to fly ships but he did not find a single lead on his mother's whereabouts despite his best efforts. Perhaps one of the most valuable things he gained during the 2 years was the friendship of a clone-wars era GH-7 medical droid named Droi that he would routinely fix.

After his 2 years of service came to an end, Dharm attempted to leave but was met with resistance as Jesper threatened to turn him into the Rodian government for the bounty on his head and let him rot in a Rodian prison for the rest of his life. Surrounded by Teemo's henchmen, Dharm knew he couldn't escape in this moment, agreed to stay and work for Teemo and secretly began to plan his escape. One day while fixing Droi and discussing their similar desires to leave Teemo and his criminal organization, a Bothan who was also working for Teemo rushed into the room in need of urgent medical attention from Droi. Both Droi and Dharm could see how fed up and angered the Bothan was and they knew exactly why. He didn't belong under Teemo's non-existent thumb any more than they did.
