Background
M42 (“Four-Two”) was once a high-end protocol droid owned by a wealthy and influential politician, customized with an advanced empathy matrix that allowed him to feel emotional nuance rather than merely simulate it. This made him exceptionally skilled at diplomacy—but also left him with a persistent, gloomy, fatalistic outlook on existence. During a tense peace negotiation between rival systems, prolonged operation and emotional overload caused M42 to mistranslate a key ceremonial phrase, igniting chaos that collapsed the talks and led to the death of his master’s daughter. Branded a rogue asset and blamed for the disaster, a bounty was placed on M42 and he fled the planet in a moment of panicked self-preservation.
Unbeknownst to most, M42 had also been fitted with elite piloting and navigation software so his master could travel discreetly without hired pilots. That upgrade saved him—briefly. The ship he escaped on belonged to the Dorman Korp Syndicate, who discovered his bounty and forced him into indentured service instead of turning him in. Now stripped of his former elegance, M42 serves as a translator, pilot, and administrator for criminal operations, living under constant threat of being sold out if he disobeys. Polite, precise, and unfailingly competent, M42 approaches every task with dry, depressive resignation, fully expecting the worst while quietly hoping—against all statistical probability—that his choices might someday amount to something better.
