Born in 16 BBY on the Hutt moon of Nar Shaddaa, Afinia Vohlem's parents sold her at a young age to serve the Besadii kajidic in exchange for a forgiveness of debts. The young Mirialan's talent with computers quickly became apparent, and she became a technician for Hutt crime lord Dertykop Besadii Runa on the faded city-world of Taris.

After the defeat of the Empire at the Battle of Endor, Afinia left Dertykop's service, hoping to gain employment with the fledgling New Republic. However, Afinia's long employment with the Hutts and her abrupt departure - leaving the Besadii clan rankled - made the prospect of hiring her a headache the Republic was unwilling to deal with, and despite her talents, job prospects failed to pan out.

Afinia found herself back on Nar Shaddaa, broke and hungry, when she met former Republic pilot Janica Halcyon, now the pilot of the freighter Liberty. Afinia and Janica hit it off after Afinia was able to improve the systems of Janica's astromech droid R6-G8, and the two entered into a partnership as Halcyon Transport Solutions.

Afinia left the employ of the Besadii clan very abruptly, and they still simmer over the insult. As of yet, their anger has not turned into action - but with the Hutts, one never knows when to expect retribution.
