Background
Roth Gar is a 47-year-old Bothan from the Stacks district of the city of Corinth, located on the planet of Montressor within the Toshokan system. Roth's dad, Jud, was a space elevator engineer, who died in 49 BBY, when a terrorist attack on Corinth's space elevator collapsed part of the structure that Jud was working on. The official story was that it was a lone-wolf, driven to violence by his untreated mental illness. But rumor in the Stacks is that it was something more than that, that there was a coverup involving the Redritch Corporation (a powerful banking conglomerate that owns a controlling stake in the space elevator) and the Sinestrom Crime Family (one of the various crime syndicates that rule Corinth's underworld).
Roth's mother, previously a stay-at-home mom, got several jobs to help support the family after her husband's death. Finding himself suddenly alone, the then-14 year old Roth took to the streets of Corinth, determined to find the truth behind the terrorist attack that killed his dad.
As the months wore on and Roth made little headway into his own investigation, he began helping out those he met on the street, starting small at first. His very first paid investigation was to help find a missing pet. Soon, Roth was sniffing out adulterers, swindlers, and hustlers, aided by a seeming 6th sense that always seemed able to help other people solve their mysteries, but never seemed to land Roth any closer to knowing more about his father's death.
Shortly after he turned 16, Roth felt that he had come to crossroads; he could continue to pursue the truth about the Space Elevator terrorist attack, or he could let it go, and lean into private investigation work full-time. With his mom getting older, and a growing sense of responsibility and maturity breathing down his neck, Roth put the mystery of the Space Elevator attack on the back burner, and began taking on more serious clients.
This decision was not an easy one for Roth, and the cases he's worked since have taken their toll. Creds are hard to come by for regular folk on Corinth, and so scraping together whatever cash you can to hire a PI usually means your already-downtrodden life has taken a recent turn for the worse; meaning that Roth has seen more than his fair share of heartbreak, horror, and injustice during his decades-long career.
Roth tries to "solve" what he can, but more often than not the problems facing your regular Corinthian are caused by machinations far beyond Roth's ability to change. Corrupt government officials, greedy bankers, and ruthless crime families keep Roth busy, but it's not the productive kind of busy; it's the kind of busy that wears you down, the kind of busy that seeps into your soul and leaves you wondering why bothered getting out of bed at all. Certainly, it's not a lifestyle that's conducive to having a family, a sentiment backed up by the two divorces Roth's got under his belt.
But when Roth does manage to solve a case, when he does manage to bring a little justice into the world, it reminds him of why he keeps doing it. Maybe it's finding some dirt on a guy's landlord so the landlord won't hike up the rent, or maybe it's helping to exonerate an innocent person that's been framed (a common occurence on Corinth). Clinging to these victories, Roth greets the next poor sap that walks through his door the same way he's greeted the hundreds that came before: with a long draw off a cigarette, an exhalation, and a deep, nearly fossilized sense of hope in his chest.
Motivation
Obligations
Case obsession: Despite claiming to have "given up" on ever finding out more about the Space Elevator Attack of 49 BBY, Roth has a false drawer in his desk that contains all of the information he's been able to dig up over the years about his father's death, including connections between the Redritch Corporation and the Sinestrom Crime Family that, if made public, would cause a major scandal for both parties. But despite all of this evidence, none of it clearly or definitively lays the blame at anyone's feet. It's ghosts and phantoms; sometimes, late at night, after a few swigs of his flask, Roth feels like he can almost put all the pieces together, but always, just before his mind can make the connections, the feeling fades. Despite this lack of luck, Roth can't seem to shake the need to know, and he sometimes allows his other responsibilities to fall by the wayside if he thinks he's got a lead related to his father, the Redritch Corp, or the Sinestrom family.
