Background
Background: Outsider
Background: He’s a wanderer from a nomadic scavenger clan, the Zha’vyr Flotilla —think a ragtag fleet of salvagers drifting the Outer Rim, piecing together tech and ships from wrecks. He’s grown up fixing engines, hacking systems, and scavenging parts, but he’s embarked on his coming of age pilgrimage to make his own name as a pirate and mechanic. Many of his kinsman return, but a good number of them simply remain expatriated from the Flotilla. As a result, the Flotilla is slow to grow larger.
Story: Ka’el hails from the Vorran Clan of the Zha’vyr Flotilla, born aboard the Zhy’rahn, a droid-organic ark scavenging the Outer Rim. Raised by his father, Vorran, and droid kin like R3-VoR, Ka’el was taught the importance of survival, ingenuity, and loyalty—values rooted in the history of his people’s escape from slavery and their fight for freedom. He entered the Wrecker’s Trial, a rite of passage for the young members of his clan: to claim a worthy ship, rare technology, or the Veil of Zhy’rahn—a holocron that leads to a lost Eden. His hope, like many younglings of the Flotilla, was to become a Veilborn. Ka’el constructed the Pearl Reforgedfrom parts salvaged from the derelicts and refuse hauled by the Flotilla for repairs and construction, honoring his ancestors' perseverance. Loyal to his roots and crew, Ka’el scavenges the fringes of space, determined to finish his Trial with a prize worthy of the Flotilla’s legacy.
The Zha’vyr Flotilla: The Zha’vyr Flotilla, or simply The Flotilla, has existed for millennia, and its origins are known to all who sail within it. Born from the ashes of a brutal past, the Flotilla’s people were once enslaved by the Krigar Extractives Corporation, forced to labor on the storm-ravaged planet of Karnath. There, under the oppressive rule of the Vayor Hegemony, they mined Nephrite Crystals—precious, powerful resources—while suffering unimaginable cruelty. But the memory of their suffering ignited a spark of rebellion. Led by Zha'vyr Naektar, they fought their way to freedom, escaping on stolen ships and vowing never to return to subjugation. The legacy of that uprising is engraved in the very core of the Flotilla’s purpose: to honor the past, protect the present, and ensure that no one, whether Twi’lek or droid, ever falls prey to tyranny again.
• Upbringing: Ka’el grew up straddling two worlds—organic grit and droid precision—within the Vorran Clan of the Zha’vyr Flotilla. Among his closest kin was R3-VoR, a scrappy astromech whose chipped paint and sharp beeps belied a fierce loyalty. R3-VoR was more than a tool; he was a teacher, patiently guiding Ka’el through the intricacies of circuits and salvage, and a brother, bickering with him over repair priorities aboard the Zhy’rahn. When Ka’el embarked on his Wrecker’s Trial, crafting the Pearl Reforgedfrom flotilla scraps, he left R3-VoR behind—or so he thought. As he blasted into the void, a familiar whirring from the cargo bay revealed the truth: R3-VoR had stowed away, unwilling to let his ‘sibling’ face the galaxy alone. Too far from the Flotilla to turn back, Ka’el accepted the droid’s presence with a mix of frustration and relief—another piece of home tethered to his pilgrimage.
Naming Convention: Clan vs. Fleet
• Clan: The Vorran Clan is Ka’el’s family unit—a lineage of mechanics and scavengers within a larger flotilla. Think of it as a quarian-style house or tribe, named for an ancestral figure (Vorran, his father’s namesake).
• Fleet: Zha’vyr Flotilla (“ZHAH-veer”)—a melodic, foreign name suggesting “seekers of the void.” It’s got that quarian echo, tying to ships like the Zhyrahn.
• Ka’el’s Name: Ka’el Vorran nar Zhyrahn
Breakdown:
• Zha'vyr – "Given for Freedom" or "Sacrifice for Freedom."
o Zha (Given) implies an active, selfless act—an offering made for the cause of freedom.
o Vyr (Sacrifice) ties to the weight of that offering, underlining the idea that true freedom comes at a significant cost, something deeply ingrained in their history.
• Zhy'Rahn – "Flight of Freedom."
o Zhy (Freedom) stays consistent, as we previously discussed, denoting the overarching theme of freedom.
o Rahn (Flight) remains tied to movement, escape, and the ongoing pursuit of liberty.
The Wrecking (Rite of Provenance) - Pilgrimage
A sacred trial undertaken by young members of the fleet in aspiration of becoming Veilborn—they are a group of young pilgrims who are sent forth to prove their value to the Flotilla. The Zha’vyr Flotilla has existed for millennia. The Flotilla is a xenophobic, nomadic conglomeration of mismatched ships and barges, banded together as a civilization that survives through scavenging, retrofitting, and closely guarded technology. This ritual is both a test of survival and ingenuity and a rite of passage into full citizenship within their society.
Purpose:
The Forging is meant to prove that an individual is worthy of the Flotilla’s trust and resources. To return successfully is to earn one's name as an independent operator, a true Veilborn, and construct one's own identity within the flotilla’s rigid hierarchy.
Primary Objectives: (Candidates must accomplish one of the following to be considered successful.)
1. Claim a Worthy Ship – Recover, steal, or salvage a vessel that is worthy of the flotilla, whether through ingenuity or cunning. The ship must be functional and either advance the flotilla’s strength or prove the candidate’s resourcefulness.
2. Recover Rare Technology – Acquire a piece of valuable lost tech, whether from the wreckage of a derelict warship, a black-market deal, or a daring heist. The technology must be something that strengthens the flotilla.
3. Find the Veil – The most honored trial: retrieve or uncover knowledge hidden from the flotilla, with the ultimate goal being the legendary Veil, an ancient holocron said to contain coordinates to Eden, a fabled paradise world that could offer the flotilla true safety.
Cultural Expectations & Philosophy: of The Wrecking
• “The Wrecking Leads to Rebuilding” – We cannot be built stronger, but through first being torn down.
• Failure is Exile – Those who return empty-handed or prove themselves unworthy may face exile or be forced into servitude within the flotilla.
• Loyalty is Earned, Not Given – The Veilborn trust only their own. Outsiders are threats or tools, nothing more. A successful candidate must navigate the galaxy without betraying the flotilla’s secrets.
• Ingenuity Over Might – Violence is an option, but outthinking opponents is seen as superior. The Forging is as much a test of strategy and cunning as it is of courage.
Candidate Profile: (Ka’el’s Role in This Tradition)
• A Scrapper, Technician, Mechanic, Smuggler, and Pirate.
• Must navigate the wider galaxy, interacting with people he was raised to distrust, without losing their own identity.
• Wants to succeed but is also drawn to the idea that there may be a better way for his people.
Ideals and Morals:
1. Loyalty to His People & Culture – For Ka’el: He believes in the flotilla’s way of life, even if he sees its flaws. His goal is to succeed in his Trial and return as a valued member, not to abandon his people.
2. Eagerness to Prove Himself – For Ka’el: His Trial is more than a challenge—it’s his chance to gain respect, prove his ingenuity, and earn his place.
3. Technological Curiosity & Ingenuity – Ka’el is fascinated by machines and is highly skilled in hacking, repairing, and repurposing tech. He sees technology as a means of survival and advancement. He shares this trait, constantly tinkering and salvaging. His view of technology is pragmatic—it’s a tool, a weapon, and a currency.
4. Strong Ethical Code (But Willing to Bend Rules) – Ka’el respects honor and duty but is also practical. He will break rules when necessary but does not betray trust lightly. He isn’t ruthless like many pirates—he sees theft and deception as necessary tools, but he avoids pointless cruelty. He values loyalty over brute force.
5. Initial Distrust of Outsiders – Ka’el is cautious around strangers but opens up when they prove themselves trustworthy. He was raised to distrust outsiders but understands that he must integrate with new cultures to accomplish his goals.
6. Belief in a Greater Future –Ka’el wonders if there is another path for his people beyond endless scavenging—perhaps a way to truly find or create Eden.
History of the Zha’vyrian Twi’lek Diaspora
The Twi’lek were held as slaves on the distant planet of Karnath; A planet plagued by constant electrical storms and molten rivers, but rich in Nephrite Crystals, making it a potentially lucrative location. The Twi’lek suffered under the iron-fisted rule of the Krigar Extractives Corporation, a dark and aggressive corporate entity, notorious for exploiting planetary systems to mine precious minerals. The Vayor Hegemony, known for its strict hierarchy and ruthless authoritarian rule, whose seat of power was on the planet of Chtharox, was in sole control of KEC. Thousands upon thousands of Twi’lek were treated brutally for centuries as they toiled and died in the extraction of Nephrite Crystals, a valuable resource for advanced power generation, especially in weaponry or large-scale energy production. The Krigar Extractives Corporation initially utilized Droids solely as guards and taskmasters. Over time, their greed motivated them to incorporate droids in to the mining workforce. Tens of thousands of Twi’lek were captured each year and relegated to the task of the mines on Karnath.
Though some droids were essentially slave labor just as the Twi’lek were, others were the guards who kept the slaves in line and working in the deep mines harvesting nephrite. Under the guidance and training of Zha’vyr Naektar the Twi’lek and Droids were organized and prepared for a bloody rebellion. When the Twi’lek were ready to make their escape, restraining bolts were removed from the slave Droids, who in turn freed the guardian Droids. The Droids were an integral part of the escape; the Twi’lek lacked the technological knowledge to deal with security measures or piloting and navigation. These tasks were handled by the Droids. Together they fought their way free. They escaped with 200-300 ships each carrying several thousand Droids and Twi’lek. It is estimated that over two million Twi’lek and droids died in the escape. Among them was Zha’vyr, who died to ensure that his people would find freedom and a new life.
The two parties were now equals and allies. Over the course of centuries, they made excursions to other planets on the fringe to release more of their enslaved people. The Twi’lek needed to understand the intricacies of technology, and were taught by the Droids over the course of centuries.
In honor of his leadership and his sacrifice his descendants have memorialized his name; The Zha’vyr Flotilla
At the heart of the Flotilla is Zha’vyr's Memorial Ship, the "Naektar's Legacy", a flagship that bears the name of its fallen leader. The ship is a symbol of the enduring will of the Twi’lek people, as well as a reminder of the high price paid for their freedom. It is heavily guarded and protected, holding deep within it the most sacred artifacts of the Zha’vyrian Twi’lek: documents, records, and stories of their ancestors' escape, ensuring that Zha’vyr’s sacrifice and the history of the Diaspora will never be forgotten.
Day of the Uprising
The Droid Memory Banks are an integral part of the Zha’vyr Flotilla, preserving the history of the Twi'lek people’s uprising and the legacy of Zha'vyr Naektar. These memory banks are housed in a vast, secure chamber aboard the Naektar's Legacy, containing records, blueprints, logs, and data that document every key moment in the Flotilla’s history. These data storages are not merely archives; they are revered repositories of knowledge, sacred to the descendants of the original freedom fighters.
The Droid Memory Banks are designed to withstand time, external interference, and even direct attacks, ensuring the preservation of this vital history for future generations. They are programmed with a highly complex set of protocols to protect the information from corruption or tampering, and only the highest-ranking officials and specially designated "Historians" among the Zha'vyrian Twi'lek have direct access to them. The data contained within these banks is often shared in private ceremonies, marking significant milestones or important dates in the calendar.
The most significant of these dates is the Day of the Uprising, a sacred day celebrated by the Zha’vyr Flotilla every year. It marks the anniversary of the rebellion on Karnath, the moment when Zha'vyr and his people, aided by the Droids, escaped their enslavement and began their journey toward freedom. On this day, the Flotilla’s ships gather in unison, and the Droids initiate a special ceremony to play the Uprising Log—a recorded account of the day’s events, including audio and visual recordings of Zha’vyr’s final commands, his leadership, and the battle that allowed the escape.
During this celebration, the Zha’vyr Flotilla will pause its typical operations, and all ships, even in the darkest corners of the galaxy, will take a moment to honor the fallen. Twi’lek children are taught the significance of the day from an early age, and the Droids, who were once slaves themselves, partake in the ceremony as a mark of solidarity. The memory banks ensure that even those who were not born on that day, who may never have known Zha’vyr personally, can hear his voice, see his face, and feel the weight of the history he created.
The Day of the Uprising is also a day of reflection. The Droids who were part of the rebellion hold a special reverence for the event, as they remember the key role they played in the escape, and many of them choose to speak about their experiences. This bond between Twi’lek and Droids, forged in rebellion and strengthened by time, is a unique aspect of the Zha’vyr Flotilla's identity.
Through these memory banks, the history of the Zha’vyrian Twi'lek people is never lost. The sacrifices, struggles, and triumphs are immortalized, ensuring that Zha’vyr’s vision for freedom and the fight against oppression will never be forgotten.
Droid Equals: The Twist
• Clan Dynamic: Droids like “R3-VoR” (a scrappy astromech) or “CL-4N” (a salvage rig) are Kael’s peers—some outrank him in clan hierarchy.
• Geth Echo: The clan’s droid sentience mirrors the geth’s rise, but they’re allies, not foes. Kael’s tech skills come from this symbiosis—he’s as much their student as their kin.
• Campaign Hook: AI villain (rogue droids, a slicer cult), Kael’s clan ties could make him a bridge—or a target?
